My current situation is that we (my mother and myself, rather than wife) are sitting on the proceeds from selling a house and we are renting while we look for a house.

I cant help but think it would be stupid to rush into anything right now...

If you were me (us) would you sit tight and spunk a grand a month on rent and wait to see what happens?

The issue, in a time of crisis, is a lack of volume - only forced sellers will sell and whilst prices could fall, equally, with government measures, they may not.

I described it as Schrodingers Crash to a client...if no one transacts, did it really happen?

No, I'd keep looking for the ideal house and buy it when I found it.

I'd go for it. Uncertain future could be stressful if you're counting on renting. I know landlords are being restricted on eviction, quite right too. But many could struggle soon and both rental options and purchasing options could significantly change.

If I'd found a good house I'd go ahead personally. Good luck with your plans.

Well as we are supposed to socially distancing I doubt there will be viewings for much longer.
And once we progress to a more Italian lock down then I can’t see the surveying and convincing process happening quickly. Plus unless it’s chain free you’d have to expect the process to be protracted.

So unless you’re ready to complete I’d think you’ve a while to wait.

We viewed a house today. The owner shook my wife's hand.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Obviously we are chain free and can move quickly. The house we have rented was only on a six month agreement and will soon be on a rolling month by month arrangement, our landlord is happy to have us for as long as we want to stay.

I just think that with things the way they are, some people are going to want to sell as quickly as they can..

ETA: we are looking in the midlands at 4-5 bed houses in the £350k range.

For the most part I don’t see your decision any different to any other time when you’re looking for a home.

Are you buying a home or making an investment?

I was in a similar position just over 18 months ago, I wasn't sure what the housing market was going to do so I decided to buy as if the housing market had crashed then the supply would've dried up for who knows how long leaving me stuck renting.

I'd imagine it will take you a good few weeks to find something to put an offer on any way?

Really?

There is a little 'instability' on the horizon..

Honestly, we are hopefully buying my mum's last home for her and an investment for my sister and I. We are a pragmatic family!

Crazy isnt it! Maybe all the people currently working from home are going to realise they could move somewhere cheaper..

This 5 bed place with cinema room and indoor pool is a little further north but can be had for £400k!

Why did she shake his hand?
Conditioned reflex reaction.

She is a school teacher who has spent the past 25 years shaking every hand that's thrust at her, because that's how the pupils end every school day (at least until recently).

Yeah, things like that can be tricky to stop. I wonder if people will not shake hands in years to come.

Where is it?

We have seen some nice places around here seemingly getting no interest.

One place we were looking at in a nice little village/town was being marketed at £350k and we were interested enough to pay for the survey which came back with a suggested value of £270k!

The Vendor was not best pleased when we offered him that...

How did his value of £350k compare to other local properties?
