Ordered paint online and its wrong colour

Evening all, I'm after an extra opinion if you could.

I've ordered paint online to paint the house exterior whilst i'm off work.

The paint is a mixed type made to order. The site selling it shows both paint and render in the same colours. We tried to order a sample, but they eventually admitted after sending us a render sample that they don't do paint samples. Anyway the render sample we got matched exactly the colour on the site, so we went ahead and bought a different colour to paint the house.

Its arrived and its clearly not the colour on the site. We ordered a light cream colour and what has arrived is light green. When it dries, its very green.

I've reported to the supplier but i suspect they will say its correct.


Am i in the wrong for ordering this sort of thing online, or should i pursue the supplier to replace or refund the paint as it doesn't match the site.

You could possibly expect a slight difference in shade but in your case its clearly the wrong colour if its dried green.
However, has it reacted with the substrate paint?
Try painting some on a different surface to see how it dries on that first..

Captain Obvious asks why you didn't get a render sample or a colour swatch in the 'different colour' you decided to order before ordering it?
Is there anything on their website warning that the actual paint might not be exactly the same as a picture on a computer screen?

I feel I'm pretty qualified to speak on this subject having worked for a few years for a paint distributor in my younger days. The brochure or online colour swatch will never look the same as a painted surface even painting it on a bit of card will not really look the same as what the paint looks like when applied to the wall.

All paint manufacturers will always advise customers to buy a proper tester pot or even a litre in the right finish and paint two coats on the surface and letting it dry before committing to a large amount. I wouldn't be surprised if the company you bought it from had a disclaimer on their website stating this. It's rare the colour would be mixed wrong as the machines are usually collaborated and levels checked and refilled every morning and 99% of the time it's just a case of putting the right base in the machine and pressing a button.

So I'm afraid it's either suck it up and get another colour or learn to like it.

Morning all, thanks for the replies.

This is what i suspected, its my fault for failing to check colour was correct. My initial anger is misdirected!


Anyway want some green paint lol? 60 litres of silicone based stuff, pretty expensive - going cheap!

This is precisely why I won't order paint online currently, to decorate.

The wife has been going on about decorating as I'm off "oh we can order it online", I want to be able to go into a store, browse the paints, buy tester pots etc as there is no way that you can trust the colours on a computer screen, plus there will always be something that I forget to order, thus necessitating a further wait and more delivery costs.

Take a picture of the result with a sheet of white A4 paper and post it here

Hold horses - is it a sage green?

If so, I'd rather that than beige anyway, Are you sure it doesn't work with the look of your house?

I actually do need some green paint !! I was about to order dulux tarragon glory 2, need about 10 litres.

However I'm not that fussy, its for work function room. What have you got?

Good news! This morning a lorry showed up with another pallet of paint on it. Now i have 60L of pure white paint, still not what i ordered, but its ok enough to use. I can only presume from the lack of contact with the supplying company, that they checked their product found it incorrectly mixed and sent out this batch.

Utterly useless company! But at least they have sent out some more to try and resolve the problem. Other places would probably just ignore the problem and hope it would go away.

What company is it?
I use many for paint (bespoke liquid chemical application engineer).

Are they the same type? Mixed a bit of the green in with the white to give a nice light green?
