Our front composite front door has obviously dropped over the years and is now catching on the bottom of the door frame. The door isn't sagging, more it needs to be lifted a bit higher at the same angle. Sadly, at this time, I can't get the fitters out to adjust it so I thought I'd have a go myself (how hard can it be?).

The door hinge looks as if it needs to be adjusted upwards as it seems to be at the lower end of its adjustment. As this:

I've googled everywhere I can and thought it was a case of releasing this Allen bolt

and adjusting the bolt at the top of the hinge.

However, I've done this and clearly the bolt is to adjust the door in and out so adjusting the angle, not the height.

The hinge looks like it needs adjusting but is this something I have to get the door off to do? In which case, I'l have to put up with it until I can get some expert help in!!

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Rob

See if there are any product/serial numbers or brand name on the hinge, then google it.

Is there a hex bolt on the underside of the hinge ?
That's how I adjusted my door when it had dropped.

Good luck. I played around with mine for hours, it wouldn't close without pulling the handle up so was misaligned somewhere.

Maybe try the bottom hinge, let it pull the door out and then it wont catch. If it's worse go the opposite way.
I'll be honest though, In the end I slammed mine in frustration. Who'd have thought it fixed it lol.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've looked for a brand but couldn't see one - the lock is branded Yale but google didn't work for that one!

There's a similar bolt on the underside - I tried turning that but it did the same as the top bolt!

Looking at the hinge pin, it's as if there are two pins - the one for alignment and the other is the one to adjust, but I can't see how to access it (the two top arrows).

You can see what looks like a thread at the bottom (arrow) but looks like the hinge may need disassembling to get at it, unless someone knows better?

I shall keep on looking/trying!!! Any other ideas very welcome!!

How far have you tried turning it? Some adjusters move the door out, then in again, then up a bit, and repeat as you keep turning it.

If it works don’t forget to do the same to the other hinges of course.

There should be an Allen key or hex key at the top or bottom of the main hinge. Turning this should raise it.

I tried turning it as much as I could. The door moves towards the frame and then stops as it butts up against it.

I guess I could have forced it but it didn't feel it would go any further.

Thanks again.

Failing that, on some hinges, 2 of the 4 screws on the door side are adjustable if you remove the 2 locking screws. Remove the 2 screws and the other 2 will raise a hidden plate in the hinge

As a guess I would say that the allen bolt in the side may be a locking screw. If this is undone then the top undone and the bottom tightened. The one at the bottom will be the one to take the door up. It will be hard as you are trying to lift a heavy slab upwards. Once one is done the others will be easier until they start to take door weight.

Thanks, I did wonder that! However, if it as heavy as it seems, as you say it will be like lifting a heavy slab so I'm concerned I may be wrong and break it!!

Having to tell the boss we can't close or lock the front door wouldn't go down well!

Thanks again

Yep, I could do that, but I'd be worried that if I don't understand quite how it works, I'm liable to do something that I can't correct, ending up with the door not shutting!!

There must be a simple explanation somewhere, even if is only "get a professional to do this - it's not a job for a novice like me!" hehe

Thanks again

Close the door, remove hinge cover on top hinge(you have a pic of this) loosen Allen bolt.
Go to lock side of door and prize the door ,carefully, towards the hinge, you will see the hinge rotate, moving the door back, hold, tighten bolt back up,done.
Hope this makes sense!

These are the easiest hinges to adjust once you know how

But that only seems to move the door horizontally, I need to lift the door vertically.

Does this work in the same way?

I have watched that many times!! frown

She says (at 25 seconds in) that to "adjust the height, release the three centre screws". I've released the three but turning any of the hinge bolts, just moves that part of the door nearer or further from the side frame, not the height.

And yes, adjusting the top hinge closer to the frame will lift the lock side of the door slightly, but I need to lift the entire door as it is square but just too low in the frame.

I can't be this stupid, can I? wobble

Thanks for all the help guys - I really do appreciate it.

Yes,if this itself doesn’t stop the door catching at the bottom,do the opposite with the bottom hinge

If this don’t work, release all 3 Allen bolts with the doorclosed and locked then pack the door up and square, tighten Allen bolts

Don’t undo all the bolt unless the doors shut
