I’m cobbling together some control electronics for a gate etc, all cheap stuff purchased from eBay / China etc

Obviously Most electronics Come from China, but buying from a random eBay site gives me no security in terms of quality control.

I will be securing all the electronics (all 240ac) in a suitable container in the loft, which I’m guessing will help suppress any fire etc, but is there some sort of magic gel or similar that can be put in the box that melts or similar in case of fire?

Basically it will be sat in a loft and I won’t be able to easily look at it

Not really but a metal enclosure containing a thermal fuse on the supply will achieve that.
Make sure it's a non re settable fuse, suitably rated and positioned.

How far will the control unit be from the gate, and is that distance allowed in any system requirements?

Metal enclosure (as per 18th edition fuse boards)and use intumescent grommets/glands or mastic/foam to seal entries then fit a detector near by if you are still worried.

Can you elaborate on what functionality the 'control electronics' perform? I was wondering if a smart relay like the Shelly 1PM might be of use as it can provides a controllable timed output with various inputs (physical switch, app etc) and also features instant overcurrent and overtemperature protection which might help on the safety front. Whilst cheap (£10) and made in China it is to a design and spec by Alterco Robotics in Bulgaria and so has trustable EU/US certifications.

It might be of no use whatsoever but thought I'd mention it just in case.
