Gas smell

After having my boiler condemned for a gas leak which was going outside im now on a paranoia.

Ive got my gas fire on as its the only source of heat in the house, when i went outside to see where the boiler flue was i could smell gas from the gas fire vent.

Is this normal? Is it venting the dangerous gas away or is my fire fecked aswell??

If you can smell gas, call British Gas as an emergency. They have some very sophisticated detectors for gas and will put your mind at ease.

Inside the boiler housing some kind of valve failed and was leaking gas but it was going outside.

Just ring the emergency line, or your boiler engineer, and get someone out to check.

The human nose is incredibly sensitive to the odour they add (something like 5 parts per billion) so it can be a tiny, harmless leak and be obvious by nose. So it might not cause a problem, but always better safe than sorry.

Exhaust gas from a boiler or gas fire does often smell like a gas leak, especially if it isn't burning correctly.

But DO NOT take the word of some people on the internet, get a gas engineer to check it out right away.

I presume you have one booked to repair/replace your boiler?

Ive stopped using the gas fire now, ill ask the gas engineer when they come to fit my new boiler, thanks chaps.

There is a smell from the vent on my new boiler, a different smell than unburnt gas.

GAS fires to tend to smell of gas more than boilers will. I have a gas fridge at my cabin and the flue stinks of gas - but it doesn't even register on the sniffer.

Sticking your nose in a gas fire flue and smelling burnt gas is like doing the same in a car exhaust pipe and smelling something a bit like burnt petrol.

OP you have a balanced flued gas fire? Whereby the fire has a vent protruding from the wall behind the appliance? This will smell a bit especially if the fire has a “real flame effect” as opposed to radiants. If you suspect there is a gas leak from the appliance you should call the gas emergency service (0800 111 999) BUT they will disconnect the fire & dangle a Do Not Use label on it. They may leave you a fan heater or two. The gas emergency lot are a make safe service only, they will then advise you to call a gas engineer to verify whether the appliance is safe or not.

OP phone [phone], gas board will come out for free as a priority and will make sure you’re safe. Don’t worry about them capping the lot, just get to a supermarket and buy a £20 fan heater.
