Yet another DYSON vacuum thread
Discussion
UPDATED ************
Hi Guys
Mrs is wanting to buy a dyson cordless floor cleaner, but for 400 quid Im trying to put her off.
We have no carpets so will only be hard floors vaccumed.
We have a small dog that sheds loads of small hairs.
Any ideas on alternatives please.
Thanks
Tim

We have a Dyson and a Shark. My mother has a Gtech. I fix them when they go wrong.
The Dyson is well designed, but cheaply built. We constantly have to strip down the power head just to keep it going, then replace it when refuses to work. We're on our 4th and they are not cheap to buy.
The Gtech is poorly designed and cheaply built. The gearbox has a metal and plastic bevel gears, so the plastic gears get eaten on a routine basis. Fortunately they are cheap to replace, but it's a major stripdown to get to the gearbox.
The shark looks cheap but it actual well implemented. It's hasn't broken down yet, and it's my wife's favourite. Even better that she bought it herself

We have a v7 Motorhead and the battery was failing.
We went round and tried loads of different brands and models.
In terms of balance and weight (and convenience) nothing compared to the dyson at all. Shark were all really cumbersome in our opinion so we ended up with a V11 absolute with the bonus soft head and the charging dock (which was free with Argos at the time).
It was worth the money in our opinion.
I’ve also replaced the battery in the v7 with a non-OEM unit for £25 recently.
ETA: most of our ground floor is tiled so the bulk of use is hard surface.

We’ve gone with no2 on the list. I’ll take a chance at the hoover for a lot less than the dyson.

Dyson eBay Outlet can save a bit of money on an older refurbished model.

I'd be keeping the cord and just getting a straight suction Henry or Miele/Sebo with just hard floors IMO.
But look out for older Dyson V6/7/8 models, that come with the Fluffy floor head. Their old models without the power of the V11 etc, but you have hard floors, dont need much airflow to suck bits off that.
Every modern vacuum manufacturer is a pile of cheap chinese toss that may last the warranty period but not 12 months post that. Even Numatic are being cheapened and cost-thinned!
Your Shark will burn out randomly on you or kill something else, Gtech will bung up the sides of the rollers if your other half has long hair (and are just carpet sweepers anyway with 100w of motor), Vax will wear itself fully out within 2 years. I'm getting an awful lot of blade 2's in for repair, with blown components from boards, broken wires or just so worn the thing can't spin anything! My own Dyson V11 is on it's 2nd main body (broken trigger) and 2nd floor head in the under 2 years I've had it... Most heavily used Dyson V6's are coming in full up internally with fluff and with a filter that's not been properly washed for years, I imagine alot are hitting the trash from it sadly
Buya nice old 1000w Miele from the mid 1990s and enjoy a smooth, low pitched bulletproof vacuum for the next decade...

We've had 2 Dyson's and both have long since died. We have a Shark vacuum cleaner and a Shark mini handheld. I can't comment on reliability yet as they are both fairly new but in terms of ease of use and performance, they are a league or two above Dyson.

Which model Dyson's did you have? We have a dyson V7 and its fantastic. I regret not buying V8 which has 10 more minutues battery life but so far in practice i haven't missed extra life.
If you buy a Dyson make sure you get their soft roller for hard floors. difference is day and night compared to standard roller.
You can spend £400 on Dyson V11 or get Dyson V8 for around £250...Dyson sell refurbished products on their Ebay store. all come with at least 1 year guarantee..

Have had a dyson V6 in the past and tbh it wasn't a bad bit of kit.
Currently have a Shark Duo Clean and have to say its pretty good for laminate and the like, brilliant infact.
Only thing I would say is the brush bar gets clogged with long hair very quickly so I would maybe go for the new anti-wrap ones, they might be marketing b
ks though!
Battery on the shark is a bit crap though if you have a big gaff.

Have a V7 Dyson with both the heads. It's about 3 odd years old now. Battery life is good on the normal setting, max gets about 3 mins now.
Initially it was a revelation on carpet, (in comparison to a Henry) it was brilliant and did a good job cleaning with the normal head on carpet.
I've since changed all the floors in our bungalow to engineered wood and am less than impressed with the Dyson now. To a point we are considering something else entirely. We have a cat and a dog, being a bungalow and having multiple doors linked to outside the convenience of the Dyson is very good but it just seems to miss a lot of what needs picking up.
The soft roller head, is capable of scratching the floor if it picks up something like a small stone that is difficult/heavy to suck up so just ends up being held rotating in the roller whilst you push it around scratching the floor. This doesn't happen often but it can do on occasion. It tends to flick random bits around the floor and doesn't work well at picking anything up when pulling the vacuum backwards towards you. Meaning you need to readjust it constantly to make sure your going forward over it.
The heads get clogged up constantly and every month or so you'll be cleaning them.
Despite considering changing it, I think most the big brands like dyson/g-tech/shark are all much of muchness. The only difference being is Dyson is very expensive in comparison.

we got a dyson v6 from the outlet 3 years ago
it gets used everyday on hard floors with and we have a short hair cat and dog and we use the motor head to clean the stairs and furniture
it works like a charm
only gripe is the battery last about 20 mins but more than enough for a whip around
never ever had any problems with it
iirc is was £150-200
