Cross ventilation
Discussion
Hi All
Bit of a strange one.
Wanting a flat roof extension with a roof lantern in it.
Want to go with a cold deck roof to keep down the thickness of the roof structure.
How do we achieve cross ventilation behind the roof lantern and up to the rear wall?
Could we cut notches in the joists behind the lantern to allow for this?
I am about to send the drawings off to a structural engineer so would check with them to see if its ok structurally.
Has anyone done this before?
Any help would be great.

Cold deck roof is a really, really bad idea at current levels of roof insulation; and that's before you start obstructing the airflow with roof lanterns.
But if you genuinely can't avoid it for technical reasons, I'd be inclined to investigate an abutment ventilation detail around the upstand of the roof llantern, before relying on something as tenuous as notched joists.
