Fly papers work well, anyone who lives near livestock knows how many flies they attract.

I have one of those electric fly zappers that you get in butchers etc, it’s a big boy job cost about 30 in maplin. I hang it up in summer in my office and when we get an annoying fly I turn it on and it really doesn’t take long to deal with it. Can get an exciting zap sometimes! Much kinder than poison and glue.
Mid summer I have a smart plug turn it on and off every so often over night
This all stemmed from having a mad jack Russel that would go bonkers chasing flies around without thinking about damage!

And how far away can they be? (They don't look great...
)My parent's (large) dog is terrified of them and will leap up and run out of the room if he hears or sees one
Comical until he knocks over a table in his mad rush to escape the evil 4 mm monster that is a bluebottle.
My father's solution is to grab the handheld vacuum cleaner with 1 metre extension attachment and run around after the fly to pin it in a corner and suck it up - he also may knock things over in his rush to deal with the problem.
God knows what visitors think of this madness.

Our local bee keeper suggested a 2 litre pop bottle, cut in half and the top inserted into the base like this:

Use a suitable bait --- jam (say) for wasps.
Something meat(y) for flies.
This chap https://www.theartofdoingstuff.com/the-best-homema...
suggests this bait for flies.
Fly Bait Recipe
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup vinegar
2 Tbsps sugar
1 Tbsp dish soap (the dish soap breaks the surface tension of the water and vinegar, making the flies unable to use it as a launching pad when they fall in it)
Use the same method for the DIY fly trap made out of a plastic bottle above, but use a smaller water bottle.
Or, a variant - decaying shrimp - meat(y)
"A mason jar, a paper cone and the secret fly bait ingredient … a raw shrimp allowed to rot in the sun for days until it has the putrid smell of liquid internal organs. Or of course, the smell of raw shrimp allowed to rot in the sun. Pest control isn’t pretty and doesn’t smell pretty.
For this trap just add water until the jar is around 1/3rd full making sure the shrimp is covered with water and place a cone made out of plastic or construction paper (plastic is obviously better for outdoor use) into the jar. The bottom of the cone needs to have a small opening where the flies can get into the jar, but won’t be able to make their way out."[url]

)Pretty sure the instructions note 5-10m away. Basically you want it far enough away that the flies are diverted to the trap first and that as it fills the smell doesn't hit the house

We live next door to a farm and these work brilliantly (the farmer also uses them).
Invest in a decent swat too. By far the best we've had are these:

(The electric tennis racquet ones are amusing for 5mins and then you revert to the above for sheer effectiveness/satisfaction.
Do be careful with the Buzz Fly Catcher, it was so efficient that it seemed to attract all the files in a large radius.
It may be refillable but the stench during the refill made me vomit, I can only compare the smell to the trucks that would carry remains from abattoirs that used to pass me as I walked to the bus stop in the early 90's in Leeds.
