Anyone living in Dover?

Hi all,

I'm looking to rent a property in Kent, to be nearer to my Son. The property in Dover seems a lot cheaper than elsewhere, probably due to its down market reputation. Is all of Dover the same, or are there areas that would still be worth considering?

Guston, West Hougham, Church Hougham, Alkham, Lydenn, St Margaret's, East Langdon and Martin Mill

Those are all smaller villages within a few miles of Dover... Dover itself is not great - I speak from experience having rented in close proximity to Dover (within 1 mile) for over 4 years.

I lived in Dover for 10 years.

Dover itself is not the nicest place in the world but its hardly a third world Country. We still have friends that live there, kids go to local schools etc and love the place.

River and Whitfield are 'nicer' places than Dover itself and right next to the town anyway. If not, you have the smaller surrounding villages.

Its really not as bad as people make out.

We live in Medway now, in a small village and the likes of Chatham/Strood/Gillingham seem worse to me than when I lived in Dover. We went into Maidstone town over the weekend and that wasn't great either.

At the end of the day, house prices are reflective of the area itself so the surrounding villages of Dover are likely to be 20-30% more expensive for the same property.
Another thing to bear in mind is the job market down that way is not exactly great and its a fair distance from London on the train so that keeps property prices lower and places in Mid/West Kent.

Dover is a bit of a hole, hardly anyone says they live there and will say they live in Temple Ewell, River, Whitfield etc as though they are far away. Whitfield has a lot of new estates and is reasonably far from the town itself.

If I had to live there I’d be looking at river. Elms vale at a pinch (but only bits of it)

Edit; new seafront/marina redevelopment is coming along, but I’m not clear what the end game of the work is.
