Tiler - how much …

Arrive at my parents yesterday just as my mum was on the phone to a tiler..
They had a part fixed on the WC and the cistern was boxed in and tiled, the plumber had carefully removed the tiles and these just needed reattaching, x3 in total.
The quoted £250 seems a little steep, and indeed the day rate for a tiler seems to be around £150 - £200. I appreciate it’s a small job, and if you cleaned all the cement off it’s going to take a little time but still.
I did overhear my mum explaining it was their 60th wedding anniversary on Sunday when trying to arrange a date and I’m wondering if he picked up on that, ahh, older customer lets fleece them …
Needless to say I put a stop to that. I’ve cleaned the edges up so they all fit back in, 20 mins that took, and I’m simply going to re-grout them, they are horizontal so not going anywhere and ideally don’t want to be stuck hard and fast in case they need removing again.
Maybe I’m being unreasonable, dunno …

No not unreasonable although it depends where you live but my day rate is £300. I generally earn more than that on metre rate. Having said that little jobs like this I will do for pennies as I know that I will be recommended for other jobs. Did a little kitchen for somebody which led to a £2000 job which in turn has led to a £5000+ job. Proper tradesmen hate the shysters too. I remember when tiling was a mostly DIY job unless you were really flash.
Also annoyed with these ‘modern’ bathrooms with tiles over everything everywhere... now even more comical and a little ironic as they hide some real tiling sins behind the vanity units!
When I can be bothered I’ll be doing a tiling course if this is what tilers get paid!
Clearly people with more money than free time, and a lack of supply of trades... goes back to that 80s/90s glut of telling kids they need to go to uni to be a success, and then those who were ‘failures’ and went into trades are now reaping the rewards.

You can moan but look at IT contractor rates. PM daily rate is 500 a day and like every job, you can get some people are really worth paying a rate for and some you just don't.
The fact is, if someone is good, they'll be in demand.
Supply and demand ratio you can up your price for high quality thats in demand.
We've had tilers. Good ones are quick, efficient, tidy and you can tell the quality of their work. Contrast that with someone who charges the same and to be honest, I Could have done a better job.
250 for 3 tiles is well into the "fleecing old people" territory and they should be ashamed but I suspect they aren't.

The number of "qualified" graduates piling out of Uni’s with a huge income expectation but no real skills will continue to drive up the rates for the trades that can’t be replaced by AI and foreign outsourcing.
Any averagely smart/handy 14 year old in the 2020s needs to rethink the recommended career options.
