Building/restoring a Dalek

My lads, age 8 & 11 want a Dalek. Looking on ebay and they can go for thousands so as it will live in the garden we didn't want to spend that much, infact we didnt want to spend anything at all. A month or so later and my sister text me a photo saying tell Jack we just met a Dalek! The Dalek was in a pub car park, it had been used for some charity bash as a static display & was now ready for the skip. Sis had a word with the landlord & he said its free if anyone wants ro take it away as it will save space in the skip. The next day I take the lads for a mystery tour out & we happened to bump into the lonely Dalek. We popped £20 in the charity box in the pub & it sort of squeezed in the back on of the car.

We cleaned it up, took it apart & as the lads wanted to get inside it I reversed all the screws holding it together so they came out wards instead on inwards as they were all to long & sticking through the inside. We then wondered what to do next.

A good think coat of paint & it looked much better, i also fitted some roller wheels so you can get in it & push it about
We then ordered 50 gold stress reliever squidgy balls that cost £40 but matched the size of the holes perfectly. The middle section I made from three BMX rims I had laying around with some mesh on the inside & then painted that black.
The arms, a shower rail with the sucker fitted perfectly & the gun we made from another part of the shower rail with the inside of a decorating roller, its nearly as good as the real deal!
Today we glued the balls in and painted & screwed the middle bits of armour, we need to straighten then all out so it looks better but its just started raining so thats it for today.
We are now on the look out for the head/dome, as we have only spent about £80 in all were just waiting to stumble on the right thing, maybe a cauldron or the top of an old round BBQ may do the trick but its coming along. I may even fit a small battery & have lights on the top, maybe also make the gun a water pistol to shoot at cars & people as the boys stumble up the road. Hoping to finish it for Halloween

Definitely a PH laugh out loud moment, love it! For the flashing lights on top you just need a pair of classic Mini indicator lamps, just like the orogianls from the '60s....

I had the plans to make one when I was a kid, never completed it though. The dome was made out of fibreglass, you made a clay mould with the shape formed by a ply board cut to the cross section and pivoted at the top, laid up mat and resin to make a grp mould then used that to make the final dome.
