Hi Guys

[UPDATE: The more I've looked at it, the more I have realised its a strip down, throw out and re-do - unfortunately]

We unfortunately hired one of the bad guys. Despite him having many good reviews (Checkatrade, Bark, Mybuilder, RatedPeople) we were left in the situation of the job you can see in the photos below and a very aggressive person, who we eventually paid to go away.

We still have his workers turning up who didn't get paid by him, and now wanting money from us. We wonder when we get the pleasure of the angry man turning up for his ladders.

Anyway...

We are out of pocket. We have a shoddy roof. We need to make the best of a bad situation. It's unfortunately "Make Do and Mend"

....id be grateful for some help and advice Of How We Fix These Various Issues

Problems with the roof - grateful for advice how to fix...

1. None of the roof OSB has been cut straight, resulting in minimal overhang in some areas.

2. Poor finish of the fibre glass. We wonder if it will be watertight, will flake, or crack.

3. Edging is atrocious. This needs to be made much neater, also, we wonder about how water will drop off it.

4. Rendering/bricks missing. So there are holes that need filling.

The roof design is sloped to the guttering.
The other Three Sides, have a raised edge.
Therefore majority of water will drain into the Gutter.

You can see his the OSB isn't straight in the pic below, large overhand towards the rear, little to none at the front

Fibre Glass looks like this...
When it was wet

Now dry

The Edging, not sure how
we can smarten this up now.

The rendering and holes to be filled...

Be grateful for some help please. As, we're out of pocket and DIY is the current option.

Just checked today’s date...
Nope - not April 1st...
Firstly contact checkatrade and send them photos. It will do absolutely nothing but make you feel slightly better.

The roof support timbers holding up the ply are woefully inadequate. And best isolate the power to that death trap.

The building itself could do with a good refurb before you tear off that abortion - you might salvage the plywood.

There are loads of YouTube videos showing how to do it and with what. I have not used glass fibre kits but the membrane roof kits are very good and easy to diy, once you have corrected the supporting structure.
Good luck.

If it was mine and I was replacing the roof on that I would be using easier DIY methods like felt.

Strip off the fibreglass and wood, make good with decent timber.
Check the roof is supported properly as those supports run front to back by the looks, in my eye and on every other sloped roof I've looked at they usually run the way of the slope and are meatier than those.
Then felt the roof properly to make it water tight.
Finish with battons to help keep the felt down or tidy the edging as needed.

Rip it off, do remedial works to the brick courses at the top, get on YouTube for flat roof replacement then frame, board and use double or triple layer torch on felt.

Framing and finishing could be done on a weekend with a mate to help.

There’s no saving that from what your pictures show.

It’s structurally unsound as is. And CDX Ply is about the worst board there is after chipboard.

It needs coming of and a decent frame building.

That isn't saveable.
Looks like a truly atrocious attempt by someone who has never picked up any type of tool before. Structurally unsound and doesn't even look anchored to anything. Looks like the ply is just sat on some 3x2 which itself, is sat on some angle iron.

Rip it all off and start again unfortunately.

You might get away with sanding, wipe with acetone and do fresh fibreglass over the top. Edges just cut with a multitool or grinder.

That's still quite a bit of material cost to throw at that, and I agree that it's best off being stripped and redone.

(not a pro, but I did do my my own garage flat roof in GRP properly)

I used to do GRP roofing a very long time ago and that is horrendous. It needs ripping up and doing properly. I don't suppose the chap doing it liked dags did he ?

tbh, if you want ease for DIY I'd re-deck the roof (which is a fair amount of the work!) and put an EPDM on it. It's pretty easy to lay if you do it methodically.

That really is a shocking piece of work, and would take as long to do that st job as to have done it properly. People who do work like that, and charge for it, should be shot. I think it's utterly unforgivable. Bare faced greed and cheek of it.

Thanks guys, it's been a pretty awful week, though at least with a small silver lining.

My Dad was discharged from hospital today after having a stroke last weekend.

Needless to say, having to deal with that all week has been emotionally tough. Made obviously significantly more difficult by this horrible man doing a terrible job then threatening me in order to get paid.

Sometimes life can be quite rubbish. But, I'm a firm believer in karma, in times like these.

Sadly it's been going on for years. We were sorting out other people's bodged GRP roofs 30 years ago. It definately seems to attract the charlatans. The worst one we saw was a roof that had just had all the edges done, so it looked finished from the ground. The rest was just a bodge of the original roof to stop it leaking until they had got paid. This was directly opposite a Police station too !

The Nail In The Coffin...

Apparently the roofer
- has taken a few days off (despite screaming at me that he needed me to pay, as hhe needed to buy materials for another job).

- he is now coming round on Thursday to finish off...

I wonder how he can finish off THIS...

That's DAYLIGHT! In the middle of the roof.
The fibreglass above it barely looks like much

£2.5k for that.

You've been scammed. Don't give them a penny more. He can't save that, needs stripping off and starting again.

Agreed. Take the loss and get a proper roofer in.

Instead of going from A to B, C then D stages lets stop the whining and go straight to D. I'm sorry to see you got ripped off, but you did so lets proceed.
Are you willing to take legal action against this guy or live with a substandard job? (Do you have anything in writing? How did you pay him?)
That's the question you need to ask yourself right now, because that's where this is going to end up.
Once you've answered that then go to the legal section, post up there and get points B and C filled in.

As the majority have said, that is a strip it all off and start again job. I’d tidy the top of the walls up a bit, build a proper deck with a shallow fall on it, membrane on top and use something like Onduline to make it waterproof. Fairly simple to DIY with and relatively cheap. I’d probably use 6x2 timbers to make it solid although the deck and Onduline aren’t that heavy. Maybe 4x2.

I have been in the flat roofing industry ( Commercial) for 40 years, and I have never seen anything as bad as that.

It’s not worth 2.5p let alone 2.5k.
