Where to buy a written off EV?

I'm looking at options for a DIY home renewables system and trying to find some kind of battery storage on the cheap. It has crossed my mind that I might be able to do something with a written off EV. Does anyone know whether they are available and relatively cheap (ie better than £1000 per kilowatt that an off the shelf domestic system would cost)

They come up at copart - beware that some have the batteries removed even though they have the flag showing 'drove when it arrived'

Prices aren't that cheap - you are not the only one thinking about this and the motors and other gubbins are also valuable - I think there is a substantial number of people breaking them.


So far as I can see, the cheapest batteries are used hybrid batteries on ebay.

You probably want to look into a LiFePO4 server rack battery. EG4 is a very good budget model i've seen on some US youtube channels and think they can be shipped to the UK. Prices there are approx $300/kWh including BMS.

Or if you are feeling lucky, buy a load of cheap cells on AliExpress and make your own battery.

Cheers for that, I didn't really know where to look other than getting quotes from a couple of " green solutions" type companies which were quoting over £10000 for a 10Kwh system. It looks like there are far cheaper options out there. Maybe I don't need to have a scrap Leaf parked in the drive. I can probably afford to have a fairly decent system after all on my limited budget.

EV batteries are in demand so you'll struggle to find them.

There is a bloke on YouTube who does tear downs of cheap high capacity batteries. Might be worth looking at that.

Did you get a quote from Tesla for the Powerwall product they do?
