Someone years ago re-plastered my kitchen wall and then slapped mortar and brick slips over the top. Looks like a brick wall. May as well have not plastered it.
Always thought a wall would look nice done with those, not recommended then?

You're really looking for what are called mathematical tiles, however you'll be lucky to source any unless you can find a tame reclamation yard around east Sussex or Kent with a batch sitting in the corner.
Brick slips are an option but really need to be stuck onto a masonry backing.
But as others have said, you'd be better just building it in brick.
