We need to transport several boxes down four floors.

The staircase is kind of spiral and there is plenty of space down the middle of it. (enough for a lift!!)

We came up with the idea of using a winch (hand operated would do) - all this winch needs is a reliable method of maintaining a slow descent.

There won't be a great deal of weight - probably 20kg max (if that).

Securing it won't be an issue as the guard rails are very sturdy.

The 'bucket' would need to be rectangular, ideally no larger than 50cm x 50cm.

Any suggestions?

Got one of these - it does the job - provided you can fix it to something. Modified ours with hook clamps so it fits on a scaff bar.

How did the several boxes get up the four floors in the first place?

Have a look at some of the ratchet blocks used on sailing dinghies. 20kg is nothing, so a simple setup like a ratchet block with a cleat could be all you need

Just be aware that not all hand winches have a controlled lowering function.

They're the boxes that the self-assembly staircase came in.

By the time you’ve figured it out and built the solution the boxes could have been transported.

Get a few mates and form a human conveyor belt?

Not as far as I am aware. It was a joke.

20kg and 50x50cm doesn’t sound like it’s worth bothering with, can you not ask a friend or neighbor to help if you can’t lift it?

Do you need a lifting bucket? Why not just sling the boxes?

For 20kg just lower them on a rope. Newton is your friend.

And yes I thought of that comedy sketch too!

Find a friend who does trad climbing with a rope and gear. This would be trivial to rig up with a few crabs and a belay device.
