Hi all,

I need an air bed about 15 nights per year when we have a lot of people over. Must be a double, will always be used indoors and with bedsheets. We put a decent mattress topper on too. A folding bed is not out of the question but it needs to fit through a loft hatch so might be difficult.

I've got through loads of mediocre air beds - double sized, about a foot high, built in inflator jobs. They just seem to gain slow leaks after a while and are never THAT comfortable.

I've slept on one before a few times that was a couple of foot high, felt like a real bed, but I can't find anything like it - when I google it I get a load of generic 'our top five air bed' pages where it's just affiliate links and no one has actually tested the products.

Anyone got a decent one to recommend?

If you've got two people staying over most of the time then I've always, always found two singles much better than one double, because of the way one of you is bound to be heavier than the other etc...

Also helps keep it all inflated, and when they inevitably spring a leak you only need to replace one of them! biggrin

I use one of these for camping and have just ordered a second for when guests stop. It's king size and 56cm high so is just like sleeping / getting in-out of a proper bed. It came within two days and you get 10% off if you use the code FIRST10

I tried an air bed.
Got tired of waking up half on the floor due to deflation.
Never cmfortable.

Went to Dreams and got a 300 quid double.
Keep it behind a wardrobe, etc.

Much better.

We use Activeera airbeds too, got a couple of singles and a double. Use them for my son sleeping in the caravan awning on holiday, and when he has friends staying over at home. Built in electric pump for both inflation and deflation. Would recommend.

I had a double airbed for a while which, when fully inflated was really comfortable.

The big problem was that when it was deflated, it couldn't be folded in such a way to avoid 'pointy' edges in the fold, which then turned in to tiny leaks. It's a bit tricky to explain, has anyone else experienced this?

Get a Megamat.
Unlike pure airbeds they are foam filled, so your partner doesn't get bounced off the ceiling every time you roll over. They are supremely comfortable, they don't suffer midnight deflation and aren't cold to lie on. They aren't PVC either, so you won't be waking to sweaty undersheets.

The double is about an inch narrower and about two inbched longer than a standard double. It's only about 5" deep. So a fitted sheet made for a standard double doesn't really work. Other than that I cna thoroughly recommend 'em. We have one bought for camping and it doubles up as a mattress for the spare bed at home.

Having been a camper for over 40yrs the best mat I have found is an Outwell Dreamcatcher.

I get a really comfy night's sleep on one of these but you have to mentally adjust to only being 10cm off the floor.

Mrs PT doesn't like it for that reason, complains a lot, then sleeps soundly on it for 8hrs.

Zero deflation, incredibly well wearing, easy to store.

Get the Bestway Fortech Air Bed (King Size). Available at 'Dreams' and it's a 'Which' best buy. £72.

I bought one a few weeks ago for a guest and it's excellent - both comfort and stays inflated all night too. smile

Thanks for the replies all! I would go for the Bestway but the delivery times are a little longer so have gone for the one below - looks excellent and the discount code really helps. Much appreciated.

We had the active era one exact for the situation you described (guests 15/20 nights a year).it was good for just abt 2 years and then inevitably has a leak. As food as airbeds are, they just don't last long.

We are now looking at other options like stackable beds, pullout beds or just a single bed with two mattresses in guest room, one of which can be out in floor for guests.

Our Activeera airbeds are quite a few years old and are still fine. Used for camping and sleepovers at home. We fold ours lengthways (each side over to middle) and then roll it up.

The cable for the pump isn't very long but never been a problem.

When used in the caravan awning on a hot night/morning the heat can really build up inside the awning so you can sweat a bit on them due the material they are made from, but never when at home.
