How do I get this door handle off??

I'm stumped by what should be a very easy task.

I've taken out the grub screws, but both handles on either side seem to be welded on the central shaft.

I've tried pulling, prying etc. Is there something basic I'm not getting here?

undo the allen key slot on the square surround? the surround will come off to reveal the fixing I guess.

Unscrew the square thing innit

That gets to the bits that can be unscrewed after you've got the handle off, so that unfortunately doesn't get me any further. Cheers though.

have you done that on both sides and then just tried to pull the handle away? maybe the bar is permanently attached to the side you're working on?

or just prybar thr handle off.

You just need a precision screwdriver. You may need pilers for extra leaverage to loosen the grub screw.
You need to loosen the screw on the handle then the allen key screw

All the grub screws are out. In my experience, taking off the grub on the handle allows to the handle to easily slip off the shaft thingy. But both sides are welded on, even after the grubs are off completely. Bizarre.

My suggestion:

Masking/electrical tape around the handle to prevent damage, then a crow bar touching the door and pull back sharply (instead of prising)

The handle and square bit come off in one piece...
Allen key grub out, remove the cover then unscrew the whole thing from the door.

Have you removed the Allen bolt from the bottom side of the square part (visible in your 2nd photo)

I’ll send my daughter around. She’s managed to remove several handles by slamming the door

Yeah, on both sides. It just reveals the mounting plate to the door face, which in itself can't come off unless the handle has been taken off the spindle.

A crowbar would probably work, but there won't be much of the door left afterwards.

I've done this simple task countless times before, but this one has finished me.

Maybe you should try undoing the plate from the door despite thinking it wont come off with the handle. I've found that a lot of interior handles are like that, the handle is fixed to the back plate, and comes off in 1 piece, you might have to move the handle up and down etc to get to all the screws. The only times I've seen the handle seperate is ones that have slightly broken, and have the internal circlip etc missing.

Have a look at photos of new ones to see how they come, 1 piece.
