booked through them.

Neighbour had some fascia work done on his house, seems OK but he is not happy with the work as they overlap not underlap, decided to complain to Checkeratrade as the guy who did them is a member, but he did not book through them.

I pointed out that Checkatrade are unlikely to be interested but he told me I don't understand the law.

I am curious who is right?

It's got nothing to do with checkatrade. If not booked through them, then whatever their terms are, they don't apply.

They aren't a professional body upholding standards.

Checkatrade are just a list of people who do work, anyone can join if they pay the subscription and take a few photos. Says it all really.

Checkatrade is a thinly disguised advertising portal. Any contract is between the homeowner and the outfit doing the work. Other than perhaps preventing reputational damage chackatrade has no commitment to the homeowner. And certainly no legal obligation.

Checkatrade is a waste of time. Had a genuinely bad experience with a chap fitting doors - wife wrote a review and it was deleted within hours.

This week's job is sorting out the mess he made.

I think if you book through them, you get a bit more of a guarantee (they will send someone out to assess disputes etc), but not sure if that was a regional pilot or national.

CheckaTrade was good in the past when run by the chap who started it, proper vetting when applying to join and all reviews posted, subs were quite reasonable for a sole trader.

Then HomeServe (I believe) offered to buy it of him, which he accepted then immediately it went down hill, subs continously increased and vetting went out the window, personally I stopped advertising with them at that point and found a local directory with similar T&C'S to what CheckaTrade was originally
