Yep…. Budget is extremely limited!

We just want a change from the North and Wakefield… I want a better life for the kids.

One is 14 and the other 3. My other half is Eastern European.

We’d consider anywhere from Southampton to Kent. It’ll clearly have to be a 2 bed somewhere.
I like the idea of being closer to the sea… the continent… and London occasionally.

The downside is clearly the cost! The south is horrendously expensive but I guess for a reason?

Any advice, pointers, etc much appreciated!

What makes you think the SE will give your kids a better life?

Wakefield isn't really North - it's not even North Yorkshire.

What constitutes a 'better life' as being close to the sea and the continent are somewhat meaningless?

I would argue that moving further North with less financial pressures, bigger open spaces, less crime and violence, dark sky, etc. would provide better.

ETA - with a low budget the resultant area for living will likely be worse too and therefore a big negative esp for the kids.

2 bed with a 14 and 3 year old?

Kent is cheaper than central south east for sure but won’t necessarily be a good place to be.

I’d be wary of thinking any move south is positive:

The South East is not all milk and honey. Furthermore, with a limited housing budget, you'll have a less nice place to live than you have currently.

The South East is busier, less friendly and has a less good work-life balance, in my experience - and it's where I am from.

However, if you are determined to head off down there, the Medway Towns have relatively low-priced housing, whilst being fairly near to London and the coast.

I can’t see it as a good move for the reasons the OP states.

For a better quality of life on a more restrained budget, I’d wager getting into the countryside further north - the Dales/Moors etc.

Wide open spaces, more house for less money, nature, less congestion, friendlier folk, good driving roads (this is PH).

The dealbreaker there is probably the job market. If you can make that work, I’d suggest it’s worth consideration.

The SE is not somewhere I’d generally subject my family to without either family ties/background there, or a big step up in budget for the equivalent living standard.

What’s wrong with where you currently live and what are you looking to achieve with the move?

Do or that budget the south west is a better bet. I moved down from the other side of the moors to the south west.

Wakefield has its issues but so do all places. For 250 you can get a nice place near places like Weston but it’s not the south east. 250k will get you a significant down grade in that region.

Why not relocate to your wife’s homeland?

My other half does not want to leave the UK. I have no idea why. It's overpriced for what it offers but she feels safe here. We've had numerous arguments about it so the UK it has to be...

I've lived in London. I'm currently in Manchester with plans to move (back) to West Yorkshire where I grew up. The rural part though. I never liked Wakefield when I was growing up, why not look at moving to a different part of Yorkshire?

250k as mentioned will get you cheek to jowl in the wrong area of the SE...

I live in the South East, just inside the M25 so I'm 30 minutes by train into central London and about 45 minutes by car to Brighton. I can't comment on where you live as to how it compares but we are looking to move West towards my eldest daughter in Gloucestershire. That area seems nicer, greener but there are undoubtedly less amenities at your disposal.

There are lots of nice places between where I live and the south coast, I'm not sure what you'd get for £250k though. Two bed new build flats round here are £300-400k but as you go south it gets cheaper.

What kind of changes you hoping for OP? smile

My plan after 60 years in London is to move up North, or Southern Europe.

£250k would get you into the crappiest places in Kent, well rough, or some South Coast place with no easy connections to the outside world and full of people down on their luck.

I'm on the outskirts of London and you'd need £350k minimum for a tiny one bed flat but it's an ok area.

I've mates who came from Wakefield and have said how much they wanted to leave. They came to London, good jobs etc but in the end the prices drove them back North.

Surely there are nice areas outside of Wakefield that will be great to live in and not cost a bomb.

Also the SE is horribly crowded. I've given up trying to get anywhere at the weekends as all the roads are rammed and the trains non existent, even before these perpetual strikes.

I'm just about to head to the Peaks for a short break, the first 20 miles of driving could easily take a couple of hours but at least once I'm there, I might be able to afford a pint.

My local charges nearly £7 a pint, just a normal pub, nothing fancy.

I was born in Kent and couldn’t wait to get out and move to the North East. It’s the London overspill. People are not as friendly in the South. My advice would be to look further North. You could get something reasonable for £250k.

I was born and bred in Medway and wouldn't recommend it as a place to move to from the North. It'll be a culture shock! If you do move there then please PM me as I can guide you to affordable areas that aren't horrible to live in. Some bits are cheap but for good reason!

Sorry OP, but £250k will not get you a better life in the SE. It will get you a 2 bed semi in a not so nice area, or a 2 bed flat in a slightly better area.

The SE is full up, thats the reason why it's so expensive. You'd be mad to consider a 2 bed with 2 kids. Thats going to get very awkward very quickly.

Doesn’t read very positive so far!

The south has a slightly better climate for starters if I’m not mistaken? Proximity to the continent has an appeal as my family is from Strasbourg so not too far at all, Poland is nearer too for the other half.

The sea proximity too is great.

The downside is undeniable, the houses are pricey.
Hastings looked affordable?

If somewhere is "affordable" there is a reason. Hastings is a dive.
