What colour dark hallway? (Paint)
Discussion
Miserable hallway in a fairly miserable flat; no windows. What colour to paint the walls? I have no idea, I read a thing recently saying conversely to what you expect that it can be better to paint dark areas a dark colour as less shadowing.
Anyway what would look decent? It’s currently a grubby beigey colour. And then what carpet colour too. Also I want to do the 5 doors a satin? white - what one doesn’t yellow too quickly (although I intend to sell the flat so not too worried)
And no I can’t rearrange the walls etc before someone suggests it!

Hopefully sell within approx a year
All white - warm bulbs and some art (simple geometric shapes that have colours that will pop) would be a good start. If you can justify it ditch the carpet and stick down some light wood laminate with a bright couple of runners (stripes will work well). Some chandelier lights would also look good but you could create some sting lamps leading down the hall (even fairy lights would work).
You want to lead the eye so try and create a journey.
Try and move the washing machine and change the handles on the door so they match.

What value is the flat / what’s your budget.Anyway what would look decent? It’s currently a grubby beigey colour. And then what carpet colour too. Also I want to do the 5 doors a satin? white - what one doesn’t yellow too quickly (although I intend to sell the flat so not too worried)

I’d put a light coloured laminate, paint it all white (or an off white like jasmime white) inc ceiling and then use water based white satin on the woodwork. If it’s higher value engineered wood or porcelain tiles and replace doors / handles, build a cupboard for the washing machine, add some large mirrors.
As mentioned use a water based (quick dry) satin on the woodwork, oil based will yellow quickly without natural light. If you’re not too handy with a brush I’d recommend using a small foam roller on the doors as getting a decent finish can be tricky with water based.
Give the woodwork a good degreasing particularly around handles etc before a thorough keying with 120/180 grit. You may find it easier painting the architraves(door frames) first and then cutting in with the emulsion on the wall.

and welcome to PHYes I will replace handles, and carpet, will look at longitudinal stripes as someone up there mentioned. Can’t go laminate as downstairs flat. Will look at the various light colours that people mention thanks, and the water based satin for the wood; plus wall pics / mirrors cheers. Don’t mind spending a bit to make it saleable or more pleasant for me if it doesn’t sell!

Measure the jutting out wall on the right, get a mirror cut to the size minus small tolerance and glue it to the wall.Gassing Station | Homes, Gardens and DIY | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
