Apparently one of the tarmac machines has broken and it needs to be emptied before they can take it to the depot. They are asking local residents if anyone wants the material. Is there any chance this is legit (not interested in the work), or is my dog going to get bummed? The guy was in full hi-viz with a blue Navara pickup sporting a yellow stripe along the side.

Sounds super dodgy to me, probably scammers who will do the work (badly) then demand you owe them a large sum of money for it.

I remember this one from about 1965. My Dad's bargain new drive lasted about a week before starting to disintegrate. At least there were no threats.

Yes, that is a thing, you can't leave tarmac in a machine otherwise it sets solid.

However.....

It's more likely they've overordered tarmac at ~£100/tonne and want to get rid.

Have they Irish accents? How much cost to you? What type of tarmac, SMA, HRA, AC10, AC6, A14,AC20, AC32? (You don't want the last 2 on your drive)

What prep work are they going to do, any tack-coat going down, etc, etc,....

Politely decline, a proper job can't be done in an hour...

Like I said, not interested in the work. Local(ish) accent, said it was the stuff with the granite top coating which they use on A-roads. Was a bit distracted as we have had a busy electricity-free morning thanks to the wind. Do have a very good photo of the guy from our Ring doorbell though.

Surely genuine Highways Agency will carry some form of ID ?

Ask him which office has planned the work and a landline contact number

There's a pretty good chance the paver will have branding on it. Just Google the company and I reckon it will be leggit.

If you don't take it they'll have to clear the paver out before the asphalt cools and then dispose of it.

SMA probably then. Just as well to turn them down. They amy or may not have laid it well, however tarmacking isn't a job that should be done on a whim.

The autumn before last I had some guy - Manchester accent, not Irish - knocking on my door. They'd just done the car park of the children's nursery up the road and "had some tarmac left over" rolleyes

Our drive has a couple of scabby patches on it, but nothing major (and still isn't) but he'd clearly been having a nosy, which really annoyed me (you can't see it from the road). Anyway, evidently "our drive wouldn't last another winter" and they could do it for £3500, right now.

Obviously I declined.

So now, some 15 or 16 months later our drive looks no different. This is what the car park of the nursery looks like - a quality job, as I'm sure you can see.

These people are absolute vermin.

This is a scam as old as the hills, I remember the warehouse manager of the first place I worked for getting done over like this and that was more than 30 years ago.

About 6 months ago my wife called me to discuss this bargain she'd been offered, they were on there way.
I have never moved so swiftly, arrived just in time to block the lorry from entering the driveway.
2 hrs argument over who was going to pay for their time and materials. There kids running around all over the place as well.
Then 2 months worry over whether my house was going to be targeted.

DO NOT FALL FOR IT.

We have a gravel driveway but where it meets the road it's just fallen to bits and needs tarmac'ing. About 2m x 4m

If we do have the highways lot nearby at some point, would they accept cash to do it? how much should I offer?

*goes to fill out fixmystreet to report the potholes down the road*
