It’s nearly that time of year and looking to cool down the south facing bedroom in my house.

Blinds closed all day and it’s still around 25 degrees at 10pm

the room is small, about 9sqm so looking at portable units before we move and have proper fitted put in.

I’ve seen one on curry’s which gets good reviews.

Any others to suggest?

I bought a DeLonghi Penguino PAC N87 5 years ago and still going strong after 5 hot seasons of use.

I think the units with an air intake duct and exhaust duct are the best, so they indoor loop is isolated… much more efficient.

Also having a good seal into the window opening.

Totally agree though, aircon or ease of installing aircon are a priority for me on future house purchases.
High EPC saves energy in winter but it’s terrible in summer/autumn.
We’re now suffering with 21deg+ in bedrooms on a night already.

Personally I’d rather pay more for heating in winter than paying more for cooling in summer.

Another vote for the DeLonghi Penguino. Can't remember when I bought ours but before we moved here, so at least 11 summers ago and still going strong. (It's not quiet, mind).

I’ve got one of these, based on reviews.

I’ve done things a bit differently though. It lives in the airing cupboard on the landing, and is vented into the chimney, which forms one wall of the airing cupboard (old floor standing boiler used to vent up this before we changed it, bottom is capped off in utility room but top of stack is still open)

When it’s warm, it gets moved slightly out the cupboard, points towards the rooms, doors left open and leave it on for a couple hours before bed. Cools the upstairs enough to get a comfortable sleep.

We tried a few and they were noisy and didn't put out much cold air really - switched to a fully installed A/C unit in the end and it's just a million times better!

Results from Which? Seems to be a noticeable difference between £400+ machines and those under.

Although this is intriguing...

It's a 4-in-1 device: dehumidifier, heater, air conditioner and fan which can be controlled by your phone ... isn't everything these days.

ElectriQ's app doesn't have the strongest password policy: it allows you to create a six-digit password without using special characters.

We bought the Takoma unit shown above last year and it served us well throughout The Scorch last summer.

I know it’s probably obvious but it is a big thing although not so noisy that we, or indeed our newborn baby at that time, weren’t able to sleep with it on during the night.

Not sure if any use, but they are starting to appear on the auction sites ...

https://www.i-bidder.com/en-gb/search-results?sear...

I had 6 of the Logik ones back in 2020 - basically the basic Currys things .. Think I got all 6 for less than 100£

You might find bidding for a couple works for you ..

I had an electrolux portable air conditioner, it cooled well but was so loud I returned it. Was like sitting next to a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer, had to raise my voice to talk in the room.

Are any of these models quieter?

Im still interested in having owning one, if a quiet one exists?

Can’t install a split system because of the landlord, can’t stick stuff to the outside of the building.

EDIT: Lol, read through some of the other threads posted by MrPointy, seems non of them are quiet.

I got a Trotec 2610 for £230 about 5 years ago, they're nearer £500 now. Noisy but very useful in a heatwave. Pipes are quite short so it'd be near a window, bear that in mind when choosing one. We used to put ours in the front bedroom/office, then use a couple of fans to blast the cool air through the house to the bedrooms. Don't think that'd work so well with a top venting AC unit.

I bought the Delonghi Pinguino PACEL98 from Amazon last year. It made the hellish temperatures completely comfortable. The only thing I regret is not buying it years ago.

It's much quieter than my sister's unknown brand unit, but it's still not what you would call silent. But it's not an annoying noise and easy to sleep with. It's also nowhere near as efficient as a proper split unit (where you have an indoor unit and an external condenser), but it's much cheaper to buy and run. In order to make mine as efficient as possible, I cut out a sheet of board so it fits an open window perfectly, and has a hole for the exhaust pipework. That means you don't have to have a window open to vent the hot air, and so warm air from outside doesn't flow into the house, undoing all the cooling. And the output temperature can be as low as 6.7°C so it cools a large room fairly quickly.

Just for clarity, are you saying that you don't want to install 'proper' air con because you are moving house soon? Have I understood?

Only reason I'm asking is that the portable units are absolutely terrible compared to an installed split system, so always install if you can.

If you are moving house soon, then fair enough, get a portable one, but if not, seriously consider a split system. They aren't expensive anymore at all.

Yes, moving in October so no point in going split for what will be 2-3 months of use. Portable will take the edge off I’m sure, plus removing the humidity will make a big difference

We've also got a Delonghi Pinguino 'Silent' (it certainly isn't) AN112. Had it for three years.

Pretty heavy and quite noisy, but works fairly well. Not anywhere near as good as built in A/C but brilliant for the two weeks of the year where A/C is actually required in the UK.

I'd buy it again.

2 x Pinguino here, as above, they work.
