This has probably been asked a lot but couldn't find a suitable thread, feel free to point me if there is one. Thoughts on best charcoal bbq's? I currently have a 12 year old Weber classic kettle. Other than the same, what do people recommend? Not looking for anything with gas or electric so no wood pellet grills please. Budget not a massive issue but £1500 tops really.

Thanks

Chaz

tbh i feel you can have best BBQ in the world and still cook a st burger. i believe its all in the skill of the chef and the choice of coals etc.

i use the "restaurant grade Big K" charcoal and its amazing stays hot for a lot longer than friend cheap ass coal. i was told to get this by another BBQ thread.

i use natural firelighters too and have a £140 costco kettle one (cheap weber)

Perhaps stick with the weber and watch some youtube videos to make the most of it , and more importantly just get out there and grill some stuff!

I do find to run a good BBQ you need a decent amount of fuel so

"restaurant grade Big K"

Do you get this online?

Thanks for the replies. I am quite happy in my cooking skills (more importantly my guests seem to look forward to my barbies!) and use of fuels. Just my actual bbq is a bit tired and wondering whether to try a new type or stick with the trusted Weber!

Weber Kettle all the way - had ours for about 10 years, still looks like new. Put charcoal on one side, sear meat etc on that side, transfer to other side of grill and stick the lid on. Works great.

Landmann are fairly decent BBQs.

I have the Taurus 660 but they have better ones.

agreed - I have the XXL Broiler

https://landmann.co.uk/products/xxl-broiler-enamel...

Main feature is dual charcoal trays that can be raised or lowered independently to ensure the desired heat remains constant as the fuel burns, allowing a hot side and a less hot side smile

Quality is pretty good too.

yeah massive 20kg bag i think off amazon , hardly expensive either - i find it last a while which was what i needed to do an indirect cooking of a ribeye joint like 4-6 inches thick.

cooked normal saus and burg at the weekend right over it and it was hot hot

so yeah i love it

Love my Webber, but if I was planning to upgrade I think I’d go for some thing like a big green egg or Kamado joe..

Big Green Egg or go home! My bbq game noticeably improved when I got mine.

Kamado of some sorts if you mean your budget is unlimited, but I reckon you're talking about a metal one in which case a Weber Master Touch is usually the go to model.

If you are not looking to do any low and slow cooks then you cannot beat a weber kettle. Lots of great accessories, and well made.

If you are doing low and slow, then the ceramic "egg" style bbq's will beat the weber as they will hold the heat more consistently.

With that budget, I would buy a couple of different size bbq's that can be used dependent on the quantity you are cooking for.

Right now I have a 57cm Weber kettle, Hellrazr Yama and a small Konro. I use all three regularly dependent on how many I'm cooking for/ what I am cooking.

I have one of those £70 barrel BBQs and its just fine. Key thing is to set up 2 zone grilling and cook with the lid down, I use a BBQ mat to do any veg, prawns or small bits that might fall through the grill at the end. If you want to add flavoured wood chips just get a smoker box and chuck in in with the coals.

you will improve your cooking with a good BBQ book rather than a fancy BBQ.

I have a Weber kettle and a Monolith LeChef kamado.

Both great. Weber is miles better bang for buck. The kamado in todays money is 2k.
Mental!

I use the kettle for camping or big family bbq’s and the kamado for general bbqs . Obvs…. Portability.

Move to a ceramic egg with an electronic fan controller…
I moved from a Weber kettle that I’d had for many years and the egg is much more useful - options it gives are standard bbq to 6 hour slow cooked lamb…

Onlyfire make some useful additions for the Weber Kettle. I have the Smoker and Santa Maria Rotisserie, I find both really good and extends it's ability.

Lotus grill user here, fast heat up time due to the inbuilt fan in the base, and uses very little coals , can get at least 5 cooks out of one of those instant light bags I used to use in my main BBQ.

Highly portable so use it on the beach when away, come in various sizes, medium is ok for 3 to 4 , anything more then you'll need the bigger version, or another make.

I replaced a 17 year old Weber kettle with a new Weber kettle and have no regrets.

My old one had a built-in metal table and four wheel trolley, but rather than spend the extra to get a small table I just bought the standard Weber bbq and built it in to a bespoke wooden trolley. I was inspired by this thread - mine is towards the end. This pic was when new, but three years on it is still going strong.

Kamado / BGE etc are all well and good, but I am happy with the Weber. It cooks all I want to cook with no problem, from burgers and sausages to whole chickens (3 at a time fit easily), big cuts of meat etc. I've also do pizza in it, which is easy and gives brilliant results.
