I'd love to live close to the coast. Somewhere that gets plenty of sun, but not too chavvy. So, if you had a spare million pounds, and a budget of c.£1m, where and what would you buy. I'm currently killing a bit of spare time looking on Rightmove and there's some fantastic places - if i make it to retirement....

Get on Rightmove and show me some examples smile

Ok, might not be too sunny, but well under budget and comes with a Unimog!

Right on the beach, 7 bedrooms and 500k change.

Is it sunny? Nope. Is it chavy? Yup. Do they have an absoloute lovely steak place nearby? Yup. Would I ever live there? Nope. However the dog loves it when we take a trip up.

Woolacombe or Croyde would be good bets, ticks all of your boxes, just not much comes up, even for a million quid!

Weirdly enough I used to follow that guy on Instagram until he stopped posting, He's got (or did have) quite an interesting collection of Ducatis and custom bikes. Some of them can be read about here https://pipeburn.com/author/geraldharrison/

I’d be looking in Scotland. Climate change will make it almost bearable soon and you can get some stunning property on the coast or loch.

Technically not currently for sale, but it has a listing on a website so as this is theoretical anyway, it's worthy of mention

How close to the coast would you need?

Coastal varies a lot, you've got cities like Portsmouth, Brighton, Plymouth, down through towns to places in the end of nowhere.

We bought a very ordinary modern house, not exciting real estate in any way, but it's well placed 15 minutes walk from a beach and more importantly, a sailing club.

But I think you will find any place where you can find a house near the coast for under a million will either have chavs living nearby or visiting in hordes in the Summer. If you had £10million, you might get a nice house in Salcombe, then your visiting chavs would be private school types who get longer holidays.

And it's a simple fact of weather that it rains more on the coast.

If you're keen on some particular coastal activity, like sailing, sea fishing, surfing, bird watching or whatever, then it's worth living on the coast, but that activity will shape what bits of the coast are attractive to you. If you're not, then there is a huge down side that everything you want is inland, which tends to mean everything is further away on crap roads clogged with emmets.

Probably something like this. The building on the water to the right on photo 6 is where I grew up. I’ve always liked these houses. No parking, terraced, no late afternoon / evening sun and I reckon a good £300K detached from reality, but it’s a nice spot. Walk to everything and RCYC straight out of the front door. I wouldn’t want to be out in the sticks down there, much of it is actually pretty grim and dull as hell.

Nice view, not sure I'd give them nearly 1.8m for it though.

Some good points. As for how close to the beach - anything from virtually on top of it to nowhere further than 5mins in car (start to finish) or 15mins walk at a quick hypothetical guess biggrin
