There is no gas in our village. We have an electric boiler with radiators.

So far, it hasn't been too expensive as we are on Economy 10 so get the benefit of cheap rate between 1-4pm, 8-10pm and five hours overnight. We have a wood burner in the lounge which gets used regularly. We use about two thirds of our electric on the cheap rate.

However, I understand that the Radio Teleswitch is being turned off in the near future and apparently our E10 meter will no longer work and our energy provider is pushing us to get a smart meter, but this will be equivalent to E7 and not have the afternoon and evening cheap rate.

Is anyone else in a similar situation or know of a provider who can offer an E10 smart meter?

The meters will all be the same.
It is a suitable tariff that you need to find.
However, you might need a bit of a wiring change to pull the teleswitch out of circuit.

Can the smart meter get a signal?

Octopus are refusing to install one at my mothers house because of likely signal issues and she is on E7.

Octopus Cosy tariff is likely nearest equivalent but requires the smart meter.

OP does your meter have the telemetry box next to it?

Do you definitely have one of those old type meters?

Yes that's the one. I had wondered if you had one of the newer (but still old) type meters which do still work as they use a different switching system.

E7 isn’t too bad in some areas. I’ve just gone to a smart meter from an E10 meter. E7 round here runs up to 0830 (bst, 0730 gmt) so I’ll be able to run the central electric wet heating in the morning and the log burner in the evening. On most days that will be sufficient and I can avoid running the heating at peak times. The peak price difference to a flat rate tariff is significantly less than last winter so the washing machine won’t be so expensive to run at a peak time. The dishwasher now gets set to run from about 0700 rather than the evening before. It’s all about working with the off peak times. If you have a smart thermostat then something like Octopus Agile may be worth a look.

Revisiting this thread as I seem to be at an impasse.

It seems we need to have our economy 10 meter replaced as the RTS is being switched off in June.

British Gas can only offer an Economy 7 smart meter which will cost us a lot more as we won't get the afternoon and evening cheap rates (11p per KW)

I've been given a list of suppliers that apparently support Economy 10, but having checked their websites, it seems that they don't.

So has anyone got an E10 smart meter and if so, who with.

Octopus do their Cosy tariff

cheap rates between 04:00 - 07:00, 13:00 - 16:00 and 22:00 - 00:00 every day, 51% cheaper than the Day rate in your region.
A peak rate between 16:00 - 19:00, 50% above the Day rate in your region.

It isn't the smart meter as such... once you have one which communicates properly - the tariff is effectively applied on top of that by the supplier.
So, your problem becomes one of finding a suitable tariff.

You may already be up to speed with this - but some people get bogged down with a 'smart meter problem' when it is just down to tariffs.
There is no reason (in theory) why your existing supplier can't continue their E10 tariff - instead of billing based on two readings gathered/switched at the meter, they could apply exactly the same billing on the 30 minute data.
BUT - I understand that they won't!

ETA: You might need a wiring change depending how the heaters are connected via the teleswitch.

We don’t have the Teleswitch meter although Eon were convinced I did based on the number of irritating texts and emails I used to get.
When I finally managed to talk to someone that seemed to understand it turned out it was all about their ability to ensure I was on the right tariff.
We have a “conventional “2 reading meter and I pay one tariff whether for day or night use.
They are also happy for me not to have a smart meter because the wife reception is so poor.
