I'm not sure whether this is a General Gassing topic (it is car related) or a homes and DIY topic (it's also garage related) but I'll put it here and hope for some some good suggestions.

I need some hooks to hang alloy wheels on, 18 inch with tyres. These look ideal but I'm always very wary of buying from Amazon, often the product isn't quite as good as you'd hope. I'd rather buy from a garage accessory specialist even if it is a bit dearer, but struggling to find anything suitable.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Garage-Holder-Storage-Bra...

If these bend or come off the wall and the wheels (or just one wheel) drops, it's going to do some serious damage to the car, so I need to make sure they're good ones.

Any suggestions please?

I have those in my garage but for my Olympic weightlifting bars and other various bars. x3 at 20kg & x2 at 25kg on 3 of them hooks with zero issues, my 60mm bar is sat on top of them too…

I did use some better self tapping coach bolts though straight into the block & they hold well…

Personally I’d double up on them for each wheel, or x1 top, x2 bottom… They’ll hold solid then

Have you seen if you’ve a local fabricator that could make proper ones for you at all? Could be an idea….

Those Amazon ones will be fine, just make sure they are anchored to the wall securely.

I use a tyre/wheel stand. 4 stacked vertically on top of each other with a spacer inbetween, so its footprint is the diameter of one tyre/wheel. Mine came with a thin cylindrical cover. Has been in use for over 10 years. Now costs £20 - £25 .

I went to a local engineering shop when I was racing motorbikes and they made me up a few, similar to that but a bigger mounting plate to spread the load on the wall. Cost me £30 for 8. came powder coated too and looked more substantial than the bought ones.

That's very helpful, thank you! Good point about the fixings, probably more important than the hooks!

I can't help thinking that would scratch the alloys

I thought about one of those, and also the racks where you put them side by side, but on hooks they will take up less space flat against the wall.

That's an interesting idea, thanks!

Just put some foam pipe insulation over it and wrap it tightly and neatly with duct tape.

This is definitely the best idea imo. That said I’ve tried various ways and in my garage it always comes back to just stacking the wheels in a corner and using the wall space for shelving. Been meaning to get one of these for a while but never got round to it https://www.zoro.co.uk/shop/storage-and-handling/s...

Wish I'd thought of it!

I have these but can't find them online anymore. They have heavy duty polyurethane tubing on the outside - sourced separately. 4 bolts each and very handy for drying out sweaty nitrile gloves stretched over the tennis ball. smile

Yep, that's what I'd do as well with the Unistrut.

Or just slip a piece of plastic Osma pipe over it.

That's the sort of thing. Like that they're 4 bolts each.
