I'm finally ready to sort the drive. 100sq M of block paving. normal dig out, nothing to worry about with the site.

nothing fancy for blocks

https://www.marshalls.co.uk/gardens-and-driveways/...

I've been quoted £322 per pack with vat.

Had one guy quote £8k plus blocks(10 min look see).

A proper company with a mega rep, all in price, sent a full detailed quote with method statement etc, £15k with vat. the only bit i didn't like was the grab removal at £2180 plus vat for the spoil removal. I'd normally pay £450 for a 20 tonne load. So I feel like this could drop by circa £1500.

i've a couple more to come in, what should I be paying? its an easy site etc.

Look at marshalls outlet shop on ebay and wait until they have a 15pc or 20pc off offer

I appreciate this isn’t directly helpful because of the time gap but 6 years ago the going rate in the south east for a standard dig out and block pave was £100 a square all in.

If you get remotely around the £10k mark you are doing well and £20k would be too much.

I had 50sq.m driveway block-paved last summer and it was £8k all-in.

I'm in South-East, not sure if it's cheaper elsewhere.

Block paving is just a pain in the behind to be honest, I'd never willingly choose that as a material.

Have you considered different options, resin for example?

I think resin is terrible looking and doesn’t last

Only thing more miserable than the faded block paving round here is the weed strewn cracked resin drives. Perhaps they were just bad installers though

It’s a fair point but then what is the right material?

I have just lifted and given away over 5,000 of those Marshalls Tegula blocks - as above they were faded and full of weed and moss. They had been down 20 years. The whole area was looking rather shabby. Now digging out to membrane and lay slate slabs and pavers.

Resin just looks nasty to me. By its nature, it won’t last.

Around 50m2 in SE last year, 6k, included removing the old 4” concrete drive.
Reputable local company, 3 generations, the 70 year old owner still drives the digger!
Took 5 days.

I’m just waiting on one more coming in. Then I’ll have to decide. Looks like the current spread is 10-15k!

Looking around, think I’ll go for 60mm thick blocks also, given the weight of modern cars, we also have a loaded horse trailer on the drive also

two things .........

Check your DPC level ............and perform the work on a dry day it will be a lot cheaper !!

1st check where your DPC is including air bricks , DPC should be 150mm above finished surface , any surveyor who doesn't mention your DPC or note gradient / drains man hole covers etc . I would not employ to work on your drive.

assuming 100m2 , that's removal of spoil 10m x 10m x depth 250mm = 25m3 or if substrate is earth 39 tons ( dry) 50 tons if wet . That equates to

8-wheel grab lorry capacity in m3 is 13 m3 or 16 tonnes. so factor in x3 at £450 = £1,350

NB once spoil removed get the same grab lorry company to deliver your MOT crushed limestone, you will need approximately 15m3 or 29 tons two lorries factor ( £1,800 inc VAT and delivery )

dig out to a minimum depth of 250mm depending on DPC level
install geo textile membrane
install 150mm type 1 MOT crushed limestone ... Don't "settle " for anything less you want a sound sub structure.
concrete any edging blocks to final level , either block or pin kerbs , soldier ( bricks placed side to side) at entrance of driveway
If you have a manhole cover , this should be replaced with a hollow tray ( same depth as blocks) and concreted in position to final level.
install 50mm sharp sand compacted
install blocks ( 50mm )
brush in kiln dry sand into joints

are you wanting to seal in the blocks ? two choices either water based ( cheap) or Polyurethane (Commercial)

https://www.smartseal.co.uk/sealers/block-paving-s...

I would recommend using a commercial product will give you 5 years if applied correctly
1st coat =2m2 per litre = 50 litres
2nd coat =3.5m2 per litre = 28 litres

total 78 litres to cover 100m2 £175.70 x 4 = £ 700

blocks are you wanting a standard block 200 x 100 x 50 ? if say in brindle with a charcoal ( picture frame border ) factor £1,500 - £2000 for blocks

For a trio Brett Brindle with charcoal picture frame that would be more expensive

materials including spoil removal £ 5000

overall factor in 4 days labour 2 man team £500 a day = £2000
then 40% profit margin
looking at
£9,800 + Vat without sealing

call it £11,500

add an extra ( £1,500 for sealing using above commercial sealer )

£ 13,000 inc VAT and sealed

that's from a fully VAT registered company Bournemouth with 10 year guarantee ..........if you go for a father and son outfit not VAT registered £6,500 -£8,000

nb

that photo

is a trio ( 3 different size paving ) the edging is a high bullnose kerb .or Tegula ...they are very expensive £7.28 each !!

much cheaper if you are bordering using a concrete round pin kerb ( bordering between grass edging ) if its level just use a normal block

Also note the weeds !! if your going to go mixed sizes expect to be weeding every year

looks like your in the right ball park figure 15k including sealing

however do your due diligence check the company records " companies house " financial records are they established ? how long have they been trading , what guarantee do they offer , can you view other drives locally ,

are they going to start and bugger off after a few days ? what ever you do get a contract in writing dont pay more than 50% up front and balance on completion .

this type of work should be started and finished consecutively ie 4 days

We've just had 62sqm done with no fancy edging blocks (they're SO expensive).

Trio pack of blocks, not super pricey, but not the cheapest you can do at around £33 sqm. If you get the brick shaped ones you can get down to around £20 sqm.

Some extras, aco drains, pipes, guttering, sand, 8 yard skip etc. were about another £1500.

Plus the guy on the digger for 1 day to dig it out and pound it down. Then 2 guys for 3 days to lay/finish it.

Came in at about £8k, all in.

£10k sounds too cheap, I'd opt for somewhere in the middle.

Thanks, good post, makes sense as it matches what people have suggested. I have thought about a polymeric sand to help with 'weeds' and rain washout.

got 2 more quotes coming, then i'll pick one!

These are the blocks i'm looking at. They've offered me them at £322 inc vat per pack.

So, as a thread update, its done, as of a 7 hours ago.

ended up at 114sq M. Marshall Tegula blocks, ACO b125's(18M), muck away, concrete edging etc, 8lm of edging blocks between the garden and the path.

Cost was £10200 including installing the gate posts(I bought and paid for at £650 for semi dry oak). Concrete for the entrance strip was on top at another £450 for materials.
