Has anyone found a decent, reliable and secure smart lock for an exterior residential door that they would recommend?

Thanks!

Following with interest.

Going to be ordering a pair of Aqara U200 in the next few weeks unless I hear of any reason not to.

I would check which ever one you chose is acceptable to your insurer, they may have list of locks that are acceptable, could help in identifying something suitable.

Ours is st. Or rather it is good when it works - but randomly the handle seems to freeze and I have to reseat the Bluetooth module to get it working. Which is inconvenient if I'm bloody locked out.

Do not link it to Alexa

A colleague was saying about how he had one, could open the front door for visors through Alexa...

"What happens when you shout through the letter box, Alexa - open the front door..."

He took it off...apparently he tried it and it did biggrin

Surely the question should be 'Alexa open the front door and where are the car keys?'

The Gadget Show have done a couple of sections on these, may be available on catch up or YouTube.

The Yale smart lock looks interesting, I want to include one smart door on our new house so I don't need to take keys out with me when I go for a ride.

We've supplied and installed several types over the years, and depending on the situation can be a great addition
e.g. access to a porch for deliveries, or a side gate/door to a garden, outbuildings.

If they don't have a physical key override, or there isn't another way of getting in to the property I would want the client to be fully aware of the potential failure point locking them out.

Some systems fail 'open' and others 'closed' following a power failure.
Many are not compliant with UK insurers as external locks for a residential property.

Thank you all for your replies and information. The information about possibly not being compliant with insurance is a great point - thanks.

Maybe a better, traditional lock is the way to go for now.

Thanks!

Making sure there is a manual way of opening it would be key (pun not intended!).

Which in that case makes having anything other than a key lock pointless to me. It just adds a complexity that is not needed.

Just to point out, most “smart locks” are just actuators that still rely on a traditional locking mechanism. So you can normally use them with whatever high rated euro cylinders you like.

A friend in the US has a Yale smart lock linked to Alexa - to unlock the door via Alexa you have to give an unlock command and then a 4 digit numerical PIN.
