Have not bought one for years, small flat, all carpet other than kitchen and bathroom, want something that will do more than just pick up bits, something that might actually clean the carpet, better with upright or cylinder?

Budget about 150-200. Probly in Jan sales

Up your budget and get a Sebo.
I have one still going strong at about 20 years old.

Have had a Miele Cat and Dog cylinder vac since 1999. It's been across multiple homes, multiple pets, cars, the garage, the fireplace and still does a great job. It just feels well put together. When it dies it'll be replaced with same brand.

Some people swear by Dyson but I've always felt my daughters lego was more robust.

Miele all the way.

I made the mistake of switching to Dyson but that was made of the worst quality plastic possible and broke in almost every way.

Back to Miele and happy. Old Miele still going strong in garage duties.

Thanks to the EU there is a 900w limit so one isn’t going to be loads better than another once they are ‘full’ power.

I got a Miele boost cx1 a few years ago. It’s a nice size for storage and does an ok job with the optional turboteq head.

The power selector dial went loose quite quickly, basically a fault but other than that it’s been good.

You do have to clean the filters quite often but that’s just a bag less thing.

Had a couple of Dyson but one was too powerful in that you couldn’t push it on a medium pile carpet. Used in the garage now but had a Shark for five years and faultless. Son also has one and a hose split. One call to Shark and it was replaced FOC (after three years)

900W is plenty. Efficiency matters more (hence the regs).
Sebo all the way for after sales support and their cheaper models are very good.

Just bought a Vax battery model and it's very impressive with what it picks up. Didn't want to spend Dyson money but so far so good
It's better than the g tech air ram it replaced.

How about a Miele Compact C2 or a Complete C2 for £135 ?

We’ve just got a Shark. It was a close run thing between it and a Miele, and we’re impressed so far.

Avoid Dyson - we had one a few years ago and it was crap. Constantly getting blocked, bits broke off and hugely overpriced.

Shark are fine for features/performance but they use the same crap plastic as everyone else. Mine is Trigger's broom now (replacement motor unit, replacement wand) and the bloody wand has broken again and is NLA.

I also have an old Miele Cat & Dog and it's built like a 90s Volvo by comparison.

My old Miele is 2200w. Never use it on that setting because the suction makes it hard to hoover. Prefer it on the 2/3rds quiet setting. At a guess, that probably isn’t too far off 900w.

It’s 15 years old now, still going strong. Just needs about £50 a year spent on filters and bags.

Same here, mine’s also around 20 years old, still going strong. Granted, I’m a single chap living on my own but it has been used over a dozen times, never let me down.

This. Totally unbeatable. Make a Miele look like a kids toy. Easy to fix, just unclips and all the parts fopr all the hoovers are available for spares.

The Rolls Royce of vacuums.

Definitely Shark. They could suck a golf ball through a hose pipe and clean like nothing else. Anti hair wrap thing works too if the other half has long hair. You can buy all the replacement parts too at a very reasonable price.

Had a sebo for 20 odd years, expensive, but worth it, like an old merc, will out live me.

Except you can't, as per my post above. It's no help them listing spares if they're not actually available.
