How much for a rectangular piece of 6mm glass, 550x227mm?

Toughened, low iron.

Asking for a friend. An incredulous friend.

I would say £30-£60 depending on where he buys it from, assuming it is arrised edges and not polished.

i presume whoever he is buying it from is paying £60 a meter with minimum area of 0.3 + their margin, most glass shops etc will double the cost of something like this.

Incl VAT, £71. Which I, err, my friend, finds astonishing.

And it’ll take 5-7 working days. Are they making the glass from scratch?

We had some glass replaced and the bloke told me there's a minimum size for any order so anything regular window sized or smaller costs the same price to him. Dunno if it's true or not!

Why do you find it astonishing? (my price above was +VAT)

Part of the problem is the size, you would likely pay the same for a bit 3x the size, due to minimum area.

You are paying for the overheads, to produce the glass.

Our glass supplier spent £1.5m on a new furnace recently, that cost is in every bit of glass.

Chances are whoever you are buying it from is buying it in, not making it themselves, even if they are, 5-7 days is to fit into production schedule. They cut glass with other bits, big glass processors dont have off cuts these days. So tomorrows work is made, the day after is also likely made, day 3 is being toughened, day 4 is being cut, day 5 is processing order.
I can make you a window in about 10 minutes, if I HAVE to, but offer 5-7 day turn around to allow for a reasonable production process..

Pretty much - it's toughened.

I guess I hit the very top of the range on the first attempt: a few pence shy of £60, plus VAT.

I’ve found somewhere 5 mins further away who can do it for £35 plus VAT, so all is well again.
