Our upstairs circuit has started tripping every time the bathroom light is switched on, there are a couple of marks on the ceiling and the fitting looks a bit knackered, any thoughts on whether I can just change the fitting or need to retire back to the junction box?

Just cut the damaged wires back until you get back to undamaged section - it looks like you only need to snip a little bit off.

Yep, you should have a little slack in the ceiling to pull down if your lucky.
