It look like our daughter will be living with us for a chunk of time after she finishes uni, so we're looking to remodel her room so that's more a complete living space for her with a decent chair/sofa, some desk/work space (with an office style chair), TV/PC, and plenty of storage as she has stuff and lots of it.

It's a decent size room as you'll see below. She doesn't need a full double bed, or the size of desk in there - they are things we had already (from the last house and our old dining room table, respectively). There's an empty fireplace behind the table, which could be used for something (?), but we mostly ignore. Ceilings are 2.5m so there is some room to put things high. We're happy to buy new stuff for this project, pretty much everything currently in the room has come from somewhere else rather than being bought for it!

A big challenge is lighting the room. The grille you can see in the back wall is to let some natural light in from the hallway behind, but even if we replaced with glass and/or increased the size, the hall isn't the brightest place once the sun gets up and over in the mornings, and the windows are low (like in the bedroom) so the light doesn't ever go straight in anyway. We're considering replacing it with an LED panel? The window proper doesn't let in a huge amount of light either; it's not large and the setback into the 3' stone walls doesn't help. Current main room lighting is central with 4 GU10 LED spots pointing out to the corners.

All comments and ideas welcome, both for the layout and the lighting smile

(BTW, the scruffy dog is not a permanent fixture of the room wink )

Interesting project!

What way does the room face? From your description it sounds like east/north? If that's the case, and you want it to be a lighter room, use a white with a red or yellow base. Anything with a blue base will make the room seem cold and uninviting

Perhaps raise the bed, so that it gives storage under?

Excuse the kiddy version link but you get the gist.

A built in wall of storage where that blue wall is may be something to consider?

Room faces south-west.

Raising the bed is certainly an idea in our heads, but not sure if daughter would be keen - initial response was not very positive when wife and her were wondering around Ikea the other day looking for inspiration.

I don't think we need to go that far, but I'll mention them to SWMBO.
