Lawnmower Choices

Hi folks

I am on the lookout for a lawnmower. Our Lawn is around 90sqr metres.

I don't fancy a hover but now torn between petrol and electric and self propelled or push.

I am tempted by this one but not sure if that's a good choice or not. Seems to get decent reviews but what concerns me on the video reviews I have seen you can't modulate the self propelled bit.....and that probably means my wife will hate it and I will end up having to do it every time. Any comments/suggestions/alternatives?

For 15 square metres you shouldn't need a petrol mower. I'd be getting a cheap electric push mower with a cable.

Or go old style and get a manual push mower!

I've got a similar sized lawn, 12 years ago when I moved in I bought a petrol mower, because I hate cables on lawnmowers. It is overkill for such a small garden, not to mention noisy etc when you have neighbours (mine also use a petrol mower, so not a problem). I will likely replace with a Makita battery electric mower, as I already have their batteries/charger.

ok....it looks like we are removing 2 sheds and a couple of raised beds and returning to lawn. That makes it around 90 square metres in total, in an L shaped garden. It is not the flattest garden but that is in the plan too.

I bought a Cobra mower with a Honda engine around 6 years ago.... bullet proof and easy to start and use:

They do a range with B&S engines too, which are not expensive. Good mowers in my experience.

EGO electric - will easily cope with 90 sq m. My 2018 EGO mower is still going strong and mows a much larger area. Much less vibration, lower noise, easier to clean, instant start, minimal servicing. Don't waste time or money on petrol in 2025

If your prepared to spaff £400+, you can get a Li-Ion mower and some batteries which will do a lot of other tools.
I don't know anyone who's been disappointed wit the battery mowers you can get now.

Petrol mowers other than ride-on are becoming obsolete.

For much less money, you can get a mains mower which is a lot quieter than petrol and easy for laydees to use.

A robot mower frees up some valuable lager time.

Lawn is bigger than yours and we have one of these, makes light work of it, had it a couple of years now, very reliable and starts easily every time, really can't fault it

I recently got one of the Makita 64v mowers (LM002), places are selling them cheaper with a 4Ah battery and charger than the ones that will use two of my 18v batteries. I paid sub £200 on an eBay offer but toolden and tools4trade have them at £240ish.

Made short work of trimming 150sqm and battery still showed 3/4 full. Push not self-powered but it’s light so not a problem for me.

For 15sqm i'd be tempted to look at some of the battery versions on offer.

I got a self propelled cobra petrol. People say battery's are great but I forget to charge things. If the petrol runs out I go to my little canister that's going on 5 years old yet the petrol still works. Petrol for me everytime. I do use mine to hoover up firtrees once trimmed, it's great.

I think these days buying anything other than a battery mower for less than half an acre of lawn would be daft now days, they are very good.

I have a very shady area of lawn which often doesn't fully dry out. My old mains electric lawnmower would clog up, where as a petrol one doesn't. Would a battery one suffer the same problem as my old electric?

I got a second hand petrol self propelled Mountfield for £100 off Facebook. An old lady wanted something easier to start so wanted rid, it was 12 months old and had just been serviced.

Had it a few years now and it's been faultless, might be worth a look.

Mine’s coming up 20 years old now. Cleaned the spark plug and filter, changed the oil at the weekend and it started first time.
