Afternoon
I have been press ganged into creating an outdoor 'garden chillout area thing', which I have been instructed, should have a roof.

I am thinking of an area no more than 12 x 12 ft. what size posts should I sink into the ground, and roof-wise, I was thinking some plastic corrugated affair, clear or uncoated?

Anyone done something like this - any recommendations for the most cost-effective solution?

Personally I’d buy one, or go and look at them to see how they are made. I suspect, depending on location, there is a relatively high chance of the wind getting under the roof covering and ripping it off!

Depends very much how exposed to wind it is.

It may not be much more expensive to go for 125 or 150mm sq posts.

I would consider galv 'post shoes' on concrete pads, because our ground can be very wet and I'm tired of fence posts rotting.

12ft square is quite a lot of 'sail area'. 12ft is a big span which needs fairly substantial timber across. It's going to end taking your weight when you get up there to cut the plants back.

I did this. Four inch posts screwed to the wall, roof made of one inch laminate boarding screwed to rafters.

Check out youtuber Haxman, he's done a couple of bits like this. Often sponsored by interesting suppliers. I liked the look of Tuff blocks for laying decking and the hurricane ties he banged into the ground to stop the lot taking off.
