What are these for ?

so I picked a more sensible and sober messageboard to pick the brains of.

Seen these in a few WW1 Cemeteries in France, Insects or birds maybe, any ideas ?

They are for drying out recently picked spaghetti, it's quite soft when picked. You dry it out and make it straight before storage or cooking.
