FRONT DOOR STEPS

Hi Folks

I've had my front door steps put in recently.

However, the guy who did the wok left a hole in the middle of the steps. He said it was for ventilation.

Is he correct? Do I need to put some sort of 'net' in front of the hole to prevent flies etc from going into that hole?

If the steps obstruct existing sub floor ventilation, then provision should be made to maintain it.

But not necessarily like that…

I think your best bet as an initial fix would be a nice external metal louvre vent with some insect mesh on the inside face.

More seriously - is that a piece of (damaged) copper pipe visible in that hole? If so, why is it there and what is it doing?

Probably an emergency fire escape for mice, and you’ve either now got a heated step or the copper pipe is there to keep slugs out.

Been there done that, I think when I did it with a brick step plinth that was going in front of a vent brick I managed the ventilation by leaving the vertical joints mostly empty and putting mesh in instead, was easy enough to do at that stage.

I think in the case above doing it for myself I'd have created a vent by drilling a proper array of holes so it looked more finished, but that's just me any not counting the time involved.

Nothing to stop that being cut out bigger and replaced with something a bit more designed.

If it's really needed, I'd make it neat rectangle or circle and put a decent-looking vent in. A soffit vent perhaps?

Yes, I think I would be getting them back to fix it properly. That's a proper bodge.
