We’re moving into a new, safe residential neighborhood later this summer and plan to switch out the locks on our exterior doors. A quick Google search reveals several options, including varying safety features, Wi-Fi enabled, key code entry, “smart locks,” and different manufacturers. I’m curious if the community has any recommendations for manufacturers, specific models, or recommended features.

Worth checking what your insurer likes / requires first.

Generally speaking you can’t go wrong with main entry locks meeting BS3621.

Get them from a reputable supplier obviously.

Neighbours have a facial recognition entry and I see them standing in the rain gurning at the camera in various poses to get in. With a key they would have been in and made a cup of tea in the time their high tech option takes.

On the plus side I’ve seen them let tradesmen in remotely when they are out but that isn’t something that appeals to me.

I use full electric multipoint locking in my main door with fingerprint reader.

Sounds like a gimmick but it s inherently more secure as the door winds its multipoint locking mechanism shut tight behind you, so the door is always locked by default yet you don t get locked out if you forget a key. A large proportion of intrusions are done when doors are left unlocked.

It can be overridden with a day mode / latch if you re in and out.

I also just used the app to open the door for a relative whilst I was on holiday.

This was factory fitted hardware in a pricey new door, not retro fitted.

What’s the backup in case of powercut? As simple as a key?

I can recommend Barnsley Lock & Safe as a supplier.

I went with CISA barrels & keyed alike so all the external doors in the house are the same, with thumb turns on the inside. I wanted identical keys in case anyone ever tries to break in and damages the lock on the front door - I can then just use another door to gain access.

The first line of backup is full house UPS but point taken, if the electronic hardware is inoperable there’s a regular albeit high grade euro cylinder and another manual keyed alike door to the rear.

Obviously nothing is impenetrable but all the usual risks are mitigated as much as is reasonable and all glazing is laminated. I just like the fact the wife can’t forget to lock the sodding door any more.

I used them too, albeit with different cylinders, as had a load from the old house, but they are a good company to deal with.
