Painting a metal garage door
Discussion
One of my properties has a garage en-bloc with other flats on the development. The doors are all Garador Mk3C metal up and over doors that were everywhere years ago. The catch on the door was broken after an attempted break in and has now been replaced but the garage door needs painting. Questions.....
Do i need to strip it back to metal or can i repaint over what is already there once its clean? if so, which I am assuming so for best result, what paint remover is best?
Is there a specific paint that I should buy for metal surfaces such as this?
Its currently a light yellow pastel colour as each garage is a different colour in pastel hues so it will need to be something similar

Metal?
As in steel?
Is it rusty?
Galvanised?
I would just treat any rust with jenolite or similar, prime the bare bits and give it a coat of outdoor gloss or maybe satin finish paint in your choice of colour.
I'd get an oil based 'trade' paint if possible.
If the old paint is too shiny for the new paint to bond to it, wet sanding sponges are quite good on profiled metal.
It's an old garage door in a block, nobody will be impressed if you make it perfect.

Im guessing its steel, its not rusty. They are all in very pristine condition as part of the mid century modern look of the development so unfortunately it does need to look perfect otherwise the leaseholder (which is us) will get upset because many of them on the board have been here like 50 years and all that. If that wasnt the case I would just paint the new bit and not be bothered As in steel?

I used Delux metal paint on a garage door pre pandemic and it still looks fine.
I rubbed the door back, I think I used wet and dry paper and a sanding sponge/pad.
Then I wiped it down to get the dust off.
I painted the creases and detailed bits with a brush to get in the corners.
Then I rolled the whole door with a foam roller.
Im pretty sure I let it go hard for a couple of days then lightly rubbed it back with wet wet and dry paper and recoated it.

If it's steel but not rusty, I would go lightly on the sanding, you don't want to sand any galvanising (etc) off.
Galvanising can be hard to paint over, a decent metal primer on the bare bits perhaps, then lightly sand the edges of the primer to blend in with the old paint.
People don't look that closely at a garage door, clean and all the same colour is the main thing.
Or just good enough so it's not the worst one in the block?

We have three Garadors which were starting to look tired and I was going to have them painted. As a temporary measure, I paid one of my children £5* to clean them down with WD40. They need doing once a year but look like new and it has only cost me £20 for the past four years.
- My children, my pay rates. It's not illegal, mind your own business.;)

The problem is that the catch and lock part has just been replaced after an attempted break in so they are raw metal. Nobody has any idea what paint was used and if it doesnt match the busy bodies on the committee will moan and insist its painted to be consistent so may as well paint it all to start withWe have three Garadors which were starting to look tired and I was going to have them painted.
