Our local glazing place closed down some time ago and I need to replace some misted-up double-glazing units.

Can anyone recommend an online supplier?

Thanks

Any local glazier will be able to supply a DG unit.
Bet theres still a few in your area.
Its at times like this a yellow pages would be handy still.
Try checkatrade for local companies and phone them.

Used a few times and never had an issue

If you go for the free delivery option be prepared to wait the full period though

Piece of piss. Just look on youtube.

There are four plastic trims that pull out with the assistance of a palet knife / paint scraper - anything with a firm thin edge. Sides then top and bottom. Do NOT lose track of which came from where as if you mix them up they can be a nightmare to remove again.

Remove trims, replace glass (and fit packers to hold them straight), then refit trims.

You don't need the glass sucker but a small rubber mallet helps immeasurable.

With doors make SURE you read about "heel and Toe'ing" them (with packers) or your door will droop.

As above... with the correct too its quite easy and with a bit of patience you can get the trim off without damage.

Depends on the upvc profile and how old the frames are. Newer profiles are usually easier than older ones.

The video just shows the beading being forced off - on ours the outer seals have to be removed and that allows the sealed unit to move outwards to release the pressure on the inner beadings before they can be removed.

Can you find a video of that? would be helpful.

At a quick glance I can’t - maybe ours are unusual, they’re thinner than normal.

So you can remove the glass from the outside? Bit of a security issues there….

Maybe that’s why they’re apparently different. You’d have to break the beads. If it came to that, you might as well just break the window.

We’ve got new windows now but I assumed they’d be the same.

No you pull out the outer gasket first before removing the inner beads. However most of the early double glazing was external beaded but also stuck with tape, mastic or held with security clips, that’s why it’s wrong to tell people that it’s easy to change units without knowing what windows they have. Most of the newer stuff is easy to change but not all of it.

... then chip in with some video links....

My last 3 houses were all "knock off" beads so its more common than not.

To the guy who asked - yes, rediculous security risk - I have an old conservatory and the beads are external. The glazing units and held in with adhesive tape - and they all drooped eventually. My new UPVC door was internal beads, as was my last rental house doors. All knock on/off beads.

Of course, you can just smash a window, or door pane to get in so nothing is secure really, but with external beads you can get in without makign any noise at all

I've used them a couple of times, if you can wait for free delivery they are pretty cosy effective. Most uPVC places buy units in rather than manufacture, my local one used to make their own but said it was no longer cost effective.
