For the past few years I have owned an Ego battery mower and other tools and whilst it is very good the mower is just too heavy at 25kg without the battery.

The other Ego products I have are a chainsaw, strimmer, two hedge trimmers and a leaf blower. I only have the one battery and never have any issues.

We have just had the rear garden wall re-built which now means I have to lift the mower up and down the steps when I want to mow the front lawn.

I'm thinking of selling all the Ego stuff and buying a Stihl mower, hedge trimer and blower as the Stihl mower is only 15kg.

Does anyone have any experience of these?

No, but when my old mains Flymo packed up I decided I was tired of fighting with the lead, which took more time than actually mowing the lawn.

'Cordless!' you say. Well, that was pricey and it would mean needing a charged battery when I had the whim to mow the lawn. So I bought an 18" push mower for about £35 and it's great. Lightweight, cheap, no batteries to charge, no mains leads. If you have a smallish lawn it's the sensible choice IMHO.

Can't you build a ramp and run the mower up that ?

How big is the lawn?
A small light mower is OK for a small lawn, but gets dull with big areas.
We have cheapo mains mower, which is small and really light, makes lawn mowing the smaller person's job....

Battery mowers seem dear for what they are, a robot starts to get interesting?

You have to weigh up the faff of cable against the cost of a battery mower.
It's still faff, walking to the bin with clippings wastes more time than faffing with cable?

Seems to me you could make a decent mower using an eBike battery instead of dinky little drill batteries?
If you already wanted an eBike of course?

Scythe. No moving parts!

Put them together - an eBike battery strapped to a couple of scythes! Switch it on and run like hell...

If you decide to sell your EGO stuff I may be interested (for the right price smile ) .... I have an ALLETT mover with EGO electronics ( Two Batteries 10+12 Ah) and an EGO Inverter .... I rate the EGO system.

I suppose I could get a strip of ply or OSB and build a lip at one end which could rest on the top step.

I bought my 86 yo father one of the Ego mowers last year as he was starting to feel the weight of his Alko self propelled which was also 12 yo. He has about 1/3 of level to do and I cant believe how good the Ego is - I would hang onto it and try and make a ramp or something

Yes I agree they are really very good. I went down the Ego route as it was during COVID times and I got a good deal from at the time when Stihl weren't available.

I will go and have a look at the Stihl units and maybe get some advice from a retailer near me that sells both brands.

I'm looking for a battery lawnmower and recently saw this cylinder mower.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Einhell-X-Change-Walk-Beh...

It looks lightweight and easy to maneuver. Anyone got one and could comment? I expect the blades would need maintenance and careful setting up.

I'm very happy with my Stihl mower which has the AK30 battery. There was a question recently about Stihl garden equipment in this thread https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I’ve got a Dewalt battery mower. It’s too big really and the only reason I bought it was because I could use my DW batteries. It’s built like a brick sthouse though!

I’ve got the Stihl 235 mower which I got to cut some grass verges at the front of my house each about 4m x 50m, because it was just too much of a faff to get my heavy Hayter Harrier mower from the back each time (and I already had the Stihl AK batteries).

It’s very light, I just pick it up with 1 hand to move it around. Cuts & collects grass fine but the only thing I would say is that the cutting deck isn’t very wide so it needs lots of passes to get the coverage. But for smaller lawns I think it would be fine.
