Anybody weigh their laundry?

I got curious one day and hung my laundry bag from a luggage scale. It all seemed to add up, seemed like I was putting about the right amount into my 8kg machine.

I carried on for a while since the scale was now in the utility room. I do like weighing things.

Then quite some time later I realised I had been reading the 'lb' scale not the 'kg'!

8kg is approximately a metric fkton of laundry. I could do all the bedsheets, duvet covers and pillowcases I have in one! In fact, even with the cotton bedsheets you'd be packing the drum full before you hit 8kg.

Really? in that case I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone fully load a washing machine!

I usually just stuff whatever fits in. Never had a low load rated cheap machine where it might matter.

Being out of balance is usually the real killer.

Tried it once to its stated capacity, the spin cycle sounded like a brick in a bin. Then it went into slow-spin-trying-to-balance mode for 10 minutes and decided it couldn't be bothered. I ended up with a soggy pile of washing that had to be taken out, re-sorted and spun in two batches.

Occasionally but every single time weight is completely different to bulk.

i.e. I'm thinking "am I putting in more than 6KG here" or whatever and actually I've got 2.5KG by weight.

I've argued with my wife about this, as our machine is 10Kg and she seems to put hardly anything in it. Videos of how much the machine wil hold show it being rammed with clothes to the point where you can barely sqeeze your hand inbetween the clothes.

maybe the weight is wet weight?

I don't like filling more than half full. Stuff doesn't wash fully otherwise. IMO.

We also have a 10kg machine and as I do the household chores it gets jammed really full every time it's used. I've never weighed a load but my back aches after carrying it downstairs. It's even worse after the wash has done and I have to carry a damp load to the tumble dryer!

The washing needs space around it in the drum to move about. The weight isn't the important criteria, it's the bulk so that the machine can agitate the clothes properly.

Manufacturers usually quote dry weight.

As said bulk matters and often if you "stuff" the machine "full" of a dry load like towels and then take a look 5 mins into the cycle it compresses massively.

So much of the dry load is just air.

When I first joined PH many years ago the tagline was "Speed matters".

Now we weigh bags of dirty sheets before loading the washing machine

Maybe the new tag should be " A clean community"?
