Smart meter - communications hub
Discussion
I have a SMETS2 meter (Octopus) which has been fine for a year, until last week.
I noticed the In-Home Display was "waiting for data" and there was no online usage data for several days. I reported the issue and they aid they'd reboot the hub remotely. But they haven't, or it hasn't worked, which is not surprising if it can't communicate.
So I gather the only option is for a DNO visit to pull the incoming fuse which reboots the meter. (Or maybe not as I have solar with batteries and automatic cutover).
Googling suggests it's quite a common problem, so why don't smart meters have a button to reset the comms hub?

The SMETS2 gas meter at my house has not transmitted for 4/5 years, last month it completely died. EDF came fitted a new one on Thursday, it’s amazing how quickly they come out when no gas is being recorded, hopefully this one will transmit. They certainly aren't as robust as the old stuff.
Mine stopped working in August. I am still waiting for them to contact me to arrange an engineer's visit. It was supposed to be 3 or 4 weeks.
I wouldn't hold your breath. However, the saving grace is that they aren't billing me. They also aren't paying me for the solar/battery/plunge pricing, but overall now it's winter I suspect I'm up.

I'm in the Yorkshire Wolds and my comms unit was always hit and miss but gradually packed up communicating.
Also with Octopus.
I must have been on a 3rd engineers visit to try to sort it. First 2 just said "it's the area you are in so you have a weak signal which sometimes won't be picked up". Anyway it got so bad that Octopus stopped receiving any data at all so they sent the 3rd engineer out. Straight away after a quick look he said "you have a wrong comms unit on there, the unit you have can get interference with the AWS at Fylingdales". He swapped it for s different unit and since then I've had no data missing.
Original unit was fitted by Bulb not Octopus.

Ongoing issue since Aug '24.
No readings or bills until I gave a reading in Aug '25 (despite monthly calls/email to octopus who installed the meter). Told the meter would start reading from Aug 25 after hard remote reset, but in Oct 25 (due to no further bills) they finally admitted there.was an issue with the comms and they weren't receiving data.
New meter to be fitted in early December. From then they will take readings for the first 6 weeks or so, then apply my spending habits to the preceding months.
Obviously anything over 12 months is unbillable and free. And yes I am caning the two EV's whenever I like atm!
