Solid Wheelbarrow Wheel Help

Sick of punctures and a friend suggested a solid wheel, but I'm really struggling to find a cheap one in the size I need which is:


Overall diameter: 400mm
Center bore: 14mm plain bore
Hub Length: 104mm
Bore Type: Plain Bore (No Bearing)

Current tyre size is 4.80/4.00-8

Nope not at all, yes they're not a good as a pneumatic tyre especially on rough ground, but when that tyre is flat and perished every other time you come to use it the solid tyre becomes one of the best things you've bought for the garden.

This. Unless it is a completely smooth surface they’re running over. Better to just add tyre sealant (or figure out what is causing the regular puncturing).

I put one from screwfix on ours. As others have said, it’s rubbish.

I have a tube of tyre goo stuff from Amazon which has worked wonders on the tyres for my ride on mower an when I can be bothered I’ll be reinstalling the old wheelbarrow tyre again too.

I have solid wheels on our barrows and can't say I can tell the difference. Certainly not enough to bother with fixing flat tyres.

We use the same size tyres on sailing dinghy trolleys.
You can buy a new wheel and tyre very cheap, but the tyres are awful and don't last a season. They are more plastic than rubber. Sun kills them.
I have used old trailer tyres, because they were at hand.

You can often find ancient trailer tyres which are still OK for this but way too old for a motorway. Trailer wheels also have the worst paint ever, so the wheels often rust, so people just buy a pair of new tyres on new wheels and the old ones are there to be scrounged.
Pneumatic tyres are IMHO worth it on stony ground or concrete areas with small steps etc.

Walsal wheelbarrow co make all the ones stocked by oue local garden centres, or if you want to pay half the price for the same thing, builders merchants.

They are not amazing quality, but ive not seen anything nicer than isnt four times the price. Solid wheels are available although ive always gone for pneumatic as as don't have hawthorn.

My solid barrow wheel works perfectly, as do the solid wheels on my sailing dinghy/kayak trolleys.

As others say, the quality of pneumatic tyres for barrows has dropped to the point where they fall apart in months.

The solid wheel on my work barrow is virtually the same as pneumatic one. I’ve moved hundreds of tons of stuff with it on all types of terrain.
