Tree bark stripped

Any idea what's going on with this tree losing its bark?

If it was only low down I'd suspect deer but this goes a fair height of the tree, must be 15-20ft all the way up. Never seen this before-

Yup, that’s an ex tree.

Squirrels will strip bark but I think your picture is more likely a long dead tree being broken down by insects and the elements.
