A friend of mine will be refurbing his current property later in the year, however, he wants to get the drive done soon as it is basically mud.

He has a detached garage that is about 10 or so meters away from where his fuse box and meter are in the house but would like the car charger installed on the side of the garage where he has a parking space.

So, basically he wants to put ducting under the soon to be new drive but not sure if he needs to put a bigger duct or separate duct etc.

He will also be having power installed to the garage as there isnt any at the moment, but neither of us are sure if the cable for the garage would be big enough to power the charger and a few sockets and lights, or if he should have a cable for garage power, and a separate cable for the charger?

If the garage requirements are just for general use & not a workshop then I suspect it would be most cost effective to run a new supply from the meter box or house CU to a new CU in the garage & then connect the EV charger to the garage CU. An electrician would need to advise on the cable size but it might end up as 10 or 16mm. If you run a sizeable twin wall duct (94/110?) then you have options even if you need to run two cables.

That's exactly how our garage is connected, including a network cable. The garage is roughly 30m from the house. Works a treat.

Same here. 10mm armoured cable from the house CU to a new CU in the garage. EV charger wired into the garage CU. 10mm seems fine for my uses, which includes welding, heater and the EV charger, although not all at the same time!

As above, don't forget to run a Cat5 data cable at the same time for the EV charger, which will terminate at the House CU in a CT clamp. The EV charger will also likely need wifi, so why not run a 2nd data cable at the same time, so he can hard wire a router in the garage for the EV charger to connect to.

Is he on, or likely to get, 3 phase?

If so it might be worth asking the spark about installing a four or five core cable instead (depending on how they plan to handle earthing) to benefit from faster charging.

Also consider whether he might have plans for PV on the garage at any point and size the cable to take that into account.

Much of that thinking goes away with a 110mm duct but make the bends nice long radiused ones. Had a swine of a job dragging the cable through the new duct into my garage because the radius was a bit on the tight side...

Thanks all, i will mention that option of fast charging but i have a feeling he had discounted that idea purely for him not really needing it due to his use case, and i am sure he already has solar on the house roof so probably wouldn't bother fitting it on the garage as well as its only a little single with a flat roof.

Makes sense about the cat5 though.

He'll need 6 to 10mm SWA most likely. I have 6mm over 20metres, underground - that's for a 4kw solar system plus running my garage (mig welder included)
