Patio base

Replacing my decking with porcelain pavers on a jouplast system. What would be the recommended aggregate base for this. Was thingking of MOT type 1. Is there anything better that binds and sticks more?

We put hard core down, then a concrete base mix to bed the slabs onto. With porcelain remember to prepare them with the relevent primer first

Any reason for the brick edging through the tiles.

A jouplast system is one of those plastic base leg things you sit the flags onto. Not really sure how sturdy they are compared to a solid base but I think they recommend a hard core compacted base for them just the same as for a solid base. I might be wrong but I would have thought the rain going between the flags (as there isn't any grout) will wash the hard core base away eventually and cause movement.

Good point. You've also got a liability to crack from shock or point loads, fatigue failure, vermin problems, etc.. Whilst it makes levelling easy, I would want to avoid a void.

Type 1 and multiple passes with a wacker as you build up the depth should be fine. We're on clay soil that likes to move. The builders who did one of our neighbours' porcelain patios poured a reinforced concrete slab on top of the hardcore - seemed like overkill, expensive, but it'll never move.

ETA: Sorry, just clocked the Jouplast part. You could maybe pour a wet concrete slurry over your hardcore once it's down. I've done this inadvertently when cleaning up from concrete pours over type 1, it binds all the fines together and leaves a hard crust that doesn't wash away.
