Hi all, whilst attempting to plant a rose in the front garden by the front door (1920's house) I've uncovered this capped pipe, anyone have any idea what it could be for and if it's obsolete?

Some context to where the pipe is in relation to the house:

I looks like capped off gas - by the key - probably redundant - "not live"

Hacking through concrete to plant something is quite committed!

Is it definitely a pipe? Could be an old earth spike if not.

Could it be an Earth rod?

I'd have just put the plant in a nice pot.

Looks like an old earth electrode, I.e. a long rod spiked into the ground with a cable attached.

Approach with caution, it might be the only thing earthing your house.

Looks to be the top of a Victorian stream driven gents enpleasurement engine, possibly a rare example of The Ghillie?

I think I am with this one.

If you are competent enough with electrics (Particularly a meter), you could try and test continuity with the earth at your consumer unit?

Hose it off for a better view, it’s definitely not a modern one, but I’ve seen a farm bonded to a buried bed frame….

Just had another go at digging around it and it came out, looks like it was an earth rod

I've reconnected it and put it back in the hole.

Doubt the rose will do very well, the roots will struggle to find nutrients, water and even spread out. I would keep it in a pot and concrete the hole back over.

Might as well chuck it away the condition it's in.
