I'm sure I read a thread about this here recently, but can't find it...

It's a conventional up and over door but the cable on one side has snapped. Is this DIYable??

Take off the 2 parts of the cable make a new one and replace it smile

Plenty of youtube videos on this. I bought a kit from Ebay which included two new cables, the tensioning tool and a long pin punch to extract/replace the cone pins.

I had this some years back
I attached the cable at the top end and then tied a thin rope to the bottom end where it hooks onto the frame at the side.
Ran the other end of the rope under the door post and attached it to the towing eye on front of the car.
Whist I stood inside the garage at the far end wearing a face shield I got someone to edge the car backwards pulling the rope, directed by me on a phone.
When the hook on the cable got to the side fixing I was able to (very nervously and carefully) attach it to the side fixing
Good luck!

I used an on line video, there are a few risks you need to heed, but mine was really just knocking a roll pin out and jamming the spring.

Yes, there is an angry spring of some sort, so some stored energy which will have your fingers off if you get it wrong!

You need enough tension to roughly take the weight of the door, but also equal tension each side.

Many years ago we had a chap to fix ours. He insisted on replacing both sides to ensure it worked evenly and smoothly.

If you want an old style weighted counter balance to replace, I've got one you can collect from High Wycombe. I guess it will be easier for you to DIY.
