BOXT Boilers - Any Good?
Discussion
I need a new boiler (LPG system setup) as mine has gone bang. Existing one is a 20 year old Glow-worm that was fitted when the house was built so it’s done alright, but has now got to the point where it’s uneconomical to fix.
I’ve had limited success with local companies over the years, but have got a couple of quotes. Both are similar to what BOXT are offering, however the boiler itself from BOXT seems better… local companies suggested brands I’d never heard of, whereas BOXT is a Worcester Bosch, which I assume is decent. Seeing as my other one is dead, their fast service also is attractive.
When you go through the process on the BOXT website they also offer extra services such as a power system clean and in-line scale reducers etc. Are these worth it? I’m assuming they’re similar to car dealer-applied Scotchguard etc.
I’ve also seen that Worcester Bosch themselves offer installs so I suppose they’re worth a go too.

After multiple failures of local companies to provide quotes (or even honour appointment times), we ended up using Heatable as they were slightly cheaper than BOXT. Excellent service from start to finish. We chose a Weissmann after a bad experience with WB, though.
Fitting a new boiler to an existing system requires a proper system flush and a magnetic filter is strongly advisable, IMO.

WB are OK, but not necessarily the gold standard. What brands were the other installers offering?David87 said:

A power flush is critical if you are having a new boiler & an in line magnetic filter highly desireable. If the others installers aren't offering these then don't use them.Mr Pointy said:

Thank you.The two locals suggested Baxi 800 and BOXT was WB Greenstar 8000+ 35kW. House is 5 bed, 2 baths, 3 showers, 3800 sqft, downstairs is boiler-powered underfloor heating, upstairs radiators.
Edit - sorry, one local was the Baxi 800 and the other was Ideal Logic Max 30kW.

Price wise they're good for a benchmark but as far as installation goes it's a bit of pot luck. I think because they do a fixed price without a site survey it can put the installers under time and material pressure if there's headaches that need solving that a site survey would have picked up on and priced into the job - which leads to poor workmanship.
I'd always reccomend to do a quote on the boxt website then ask a couple of local companies for a quote and ask them to justify any price differential as generally unless theres multiple issues to be solved there's usually plenty margin left in it for the installers if boxt are cut out the loop.

Boxt have been fine on the couple of occasions I’ve used them.
Regarding boiler choice, that’s another topic really. If you don’t know Baxi and Ideal and would go WB as you’ve heard of them then you’ll miss some other good boilers. It can be a chance to get something better, as the old one is dying.
