We paid our mortgage off years ago.

I now need to get a copy of our deeds.

HMG want almost £60 for a copy.

What a con. The Building Society sent the paper deeds to Land Registry who did not return them to me.

Now they want money to email me a copy.

Annoyed beyond reason or what.

Are you going direct to the .gov.uk website?

There are a lot of websites which pay to get to the top of google results, then charge you a lot as intermediaries.
Last stuff I got from Land Reg was £6 per item IIRC having doubled from £3 a couple of years ago.

When I paid off my mortgage the B/Soc sent the deeds to me, not to LR.

I hear that paper deeds, often containing irreplaceable history, have been destroyed over the last ten years.

This.

It's £3 for the deeds and £3 for the plan. As above, it's probably gone up - but still not expensive.

If you're struggling to get them online, PM me and I'll have a look for you - the Land Registry website is OK, but not entirely intuitive.

Why do you need the deeds? They are stored online and have been for years, the paper copies are worthless.

When I paid off my mortgage I just got a letter off the bank saying the mortgage balance was zero.

Should I have been given the deeds? In any case should I possess a copy of the deeds? I have no deeds or anything else.

If you have paid off your mortgage & there are no charges against the property make sure you sign up for the LR monitoring service which will alert you to any activity to do with your property.

Good point. I did that yonks ago. They do send updates periodically which is good. Link here: https://propertyalert.landregistry.gov.uk/
